The Most Dangerous Game.

Postby NFS_Shadow » Wed Apr 03, 2013 10:46 pm

I'm sure you're all familiar with the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" by richard connel however in case you aren't the basics are, there is an older man who lives on a private island who first takes care of castaways and then sets them out on their own in the jungle so he can hunt them. Only the thrill and danger of human prey excites him.

What are your thoughts on the hosting of a game along these lines? It would have to be in state forest, a multi day event. and run with small groups. Basics would be the prey (say a small amount of players with nothing more but a spring pistol with one mag and whatever survival gear they would like for the next few days in the woods) would have a 2-4 hour headstart and then the groups hunting them would be sent out after them.

Obviously people getting lost would be a major concern which is why this would be limited to adults with some amount of land-nav experience. This could possibly continue for multiple days straight (time limit set for survival of the prey say 72 hours until victory) and would require the participants to camp in the forest and be 100% self sufficient.

Suggestions? Support? Concerns?

I would play it if I had any amount of wilderness survival gear, and lived anywhere near where I presume this would take place... Though what would you consider to be a sufficient amount of land-nav experience?

A sufficient amount of land nav experience is your own discretion, for the most part. If you show up and have no map and no compass and or no idea how to use them you probably shouldn't go venturing off into the woods.

Also you don't necessarily need tons of wilderness survival gear. Since this would take place either this may or sometime in september it will be warm enough that a jacket and pants will suffice for sleeping outside.

Basic needs would be:
Firestick
waterbottle (camelback 2liters, and some way of filtering more water from a creek)
knife
map
compass (gps to supplement if available)
orange flagging ribbon, signal mirror, radio and whistle in case of an injury to contact other players
warm jacket

As far as location goes, until i find a better area this would be held in the tillamook state forest. The other areas i am considering however are the Mt. Hood national forest and the santiam wilderness. I'm in the process of deciding exactly where because i'm trying to find a large section that is still bordered by a highway or major road on each side without getting to big of an expanse. Tillamook is the first choice though because of proximity to portland and the hospital in Tillamook is a quick drive away in case anybody gets hurt.

Well they do say that most prefer to have a lover for companionship during a survival situation.

Maybe like the show man tracker and the hunted need to make it to a predetermined destination in pairs or small groups with limited gear.

That sounds really cool!
It'd be neat to have it be like a SERE event with mandatory check-ins via GPS/whatever so people could... Paytospectate?

That is a cool idea. As of now i'm making the final decision as to which section of forest to host this. Since there's no field fees (except any costs for the acquisition of the permit) i will be keeping any admission down around $10-20 per person which will then go into some sort of pool. This way it can be run as a competition with set check in points as well as a final destination so that the runners could be timed. The hunters would also be judged by how successful at stopping the runners they are, and at the end of it all first and second place on both sides would get a cash prize.
