I think this falls in "Other Gear" (smoke grenades)

Postby Junto » Fri Jun 08, 2012 7:41 pm

I love games where you get to try and use smoke on the field and it's hard for me to only stock up once a year when 4th of July comes around. Saw this site in a facebook add.
http://www.onlinefireworks.com/smokepai ... plies.aspx

Some of the products offered aren't great, but I see a few that I've had pass through my hands before that weren't completely useless. They've got your standard mammoth smoke type firework in a pull-string variation, which is handy. Several products also claim to be cool-burning, which definitely seems nice compared to your ordinary mammoth smokes and even the hallowed marine smokes.

These strike-and-throw grenades are said to go off with a flash and a bang. I may have to order a few things and try them out.

Thoughts? Anything catch your eye? Got a baseless opinion on smoke grenades that will turn this thread into a madhouse? Go nuts.

I think cool burning just means they don't emit any open flames...they still get plenty hot. At least the "cool burning" ones I know of.

Yeah, Phoenix. I figured as much, but I've seen jets of flame come out of the average fireworks stand smoke bomb before they really go off, so it's not a bad improvement. I think a few of the battlefield ones came through DRAT hands a few years ago. They worked well when the pull-string didn't come unattached.

Makes me very weary of those thermo-baric grenades... although it looks like the dumb shits put the thing in a cardboard box...

I might have to pick some up for the next CQC event...

I got some of these "Tactical Smokes" once at Desert Rat when they were still in business. They worked decently for how small they are.

So I was wondering how much smoke grenades are used at events up here? I don't ever remember them being aloud in CA.

AS long as burn season isn't in effect, they get used.
But once summer is running strong, we usually don't use them as it's too dry.

Luckily Oregon is usually wet which makes smoke work.

I have no input on best brands, though I will be watching this thread as smoke is as integral to close in fighting as hand grenades.

I may or may not have lit a small grass fire using a smoke grenade at one of the fields we use... This was with permission from the owner/host too... Always keep an eye on those damn smoke grenades.

As far as I know you cannot buy fireworks online and legally own them in Oregon. I found this link on the site you posted. http://www.americanpyro.com/State%20Laws%20(main)/PDFStates/OR08.pdf Basically if it's a firework and you didn't buy it at a stand or store in Oregon you can't have it. You can make or buy your own smoke grenades as they are considered signaling or safety devices. I'll probably have a bunch for sale at summer slaughter.

A "cold burning" one, or just your standard kind?

And Junto, the lack of flames jetting out is a huge improvement. The "make it yourself" variety of smoke grenades should be called "smokey fire starters" because that is what they look like.

Edit: Also that kid picked that blue smoke back up while it had been going for a bit, so that makes it a good bit cooler than I remember them being. That is definitely a good sign.

It was supposedly a "cool burning" one. But the damn thing got really hot to the touch through the cardboard body tube.

Sportsmoke.com the makers of the battlefield grenades. Redtalon used to be sponsored by them.

Expensive but seem legit. Been meaning to put a large order in as soon as i have the spare money.

An update: For those who are age 16 on the state of Oregon, your local Bi-Mart has pull-string smoke grenades (like the one shaped like a pineapple grenade) for $3.99 with no shipping costs instead of $4.99 and shipping from onlinefireworks.com. They also carry variety packs of smoke sticks that contain 6 useable fireworks, but they are fuse lit for $3.49. I know my advertising this might seem useless, but those pull string pineapples arent that bad, i'd say they're alright for a large smokescreen if a whole squad sets them off at once. The sticks, which allow colored smoke, are good for using as a signal, but if you're after a rainbow smokescreen I'd have to ask if you were going for epic, silly, or otherwise. I've tested them and I am satisfied, but I suggest equipping multiple members of a unit or squad with these devices for more practical combat use at major fields.

I personally believe that smoke grenades should be a more common item in airsoft, especially for milsim. If you want to stock up now they are cheap in store, but remember, they are available year round at the website Junto has posted at the top of this thread.

Note: Smoke balls have proven effective in colored form only. White smoke balls are ineffective unless many are lit at once.

Disclaimer: as a victim of smoke-ball caused severe burns, I do not condone using them as a weapon or prank against other persons. Be extremely careful at all times with the use of smoke-creating-devices. They are pyrotechnic and can cause severe damage if you are not careful.

A person who thought he was funny threw a lit smoke ball at me and it got stuck under my tac gear, burning through my clothes, destroying my BDU blouse, and melting my chest rig and several pouches, as well as burning my abdomen and fusing the hot material to my skin. The process of removing it and healing was painful and slow, and the overall cost of fixing me up/replacing my gear was above $2000. Don't be an idiot. Fire is fire. You can hurt someone if you aren't careful.
