When I read it, I see it as more of a combination of training and a competition for the people attending. As well as a chance for them to make sure some jackhole is not running around their games with a 550FPS gun shooting people point blank. Hence the certification for "their" games. I really do not find any fault with that.
I saw just this scenario at 1st swords sniper qualification.
I was working one station and i saw one kid come up with a DMR that he said was shooting 450 fps. The first target you had to use your pistol. This kid couldn't hit the target with his pistol. He pulled the trigger as fast as he could to unload the mag. I think he might have hit it once.
When i walked over to the 50 foot marker, the kid tried to lay on the ground to get in a position. He then sat up in a sitting position then finally stood up.
He didnt take a shot yet.
Finally in a standing position, he proceeded to unload his small cap as fast as he can. I had to take cover due to the amount of stray bb's coming my way.
I gained a new respect for the course that is offered by AP, Spokane, PG and 1st sword.
Being a sniper just isnt pulling the trigger. The amount of work it takes to get to the position to take the shot is what i found to be interesting.
I think these courses weed out those individuals that want to run as a sniper but are unable to. Thus, showing those that are qualified that there is always room for improvement.
At the risk of making a quote tunnel . . . . .
I've been asked in the past why I'm dead against any electric/semi-automatic whatever being used over 400fps, and this thread offers me an opportunity to stand up here on this soap box (
I got this soap box from the 'Tide' soap company, please support their company and purchase Tide Laundry Soap). Really I'm against them being over 330fps, but as the accepted standard has been 400fps, I've gone with that. Anyway, before I go off on a different tangent while standing on this soap box . . . . .
As has been stated before, I'm old. An ancient bleeding geezer. I was around before there was light, rode a dinosaur to school, and had Jesus Christ as a Mess Corporal when I was soldiering around. In the years long long ago, there were no FPS limits.
I personally planted a bb
IN a guys face using a PSG1 that was over 500fps because I was too close (
and then I watched the guy pop it oud like he was popping a pimple - gross). I watched as a stray bb from either Foley (over 400fps), or Chris O'Mara's (over 500fps) gun shot out Jesse from Nukeproof's tooth. And thats only a couple examples. More exist, I just really don't feel like taking us all down a jaunt down memory lane. Also, my alzheimers is acting up.
Anyway, every couple months, some whiny phony pony who can't shoot, but fancies themself a marksman, wants their particular class of weapon to get a special exemption so they can operate at a higher power level than everyone else. They say they 'need' the extra range. Somehow, a scope magicaly gives an M16 more range? I've run a scope on a M16, and kids . . . . . its still a 3-500 meter rifle. Just now you can see the target a little more clearly. Thats It. Out in the really-real-world, a scope doesn't make your bullet travel any faster or any further, it just allows you to see your target a little more clearly.
As Toddski reported, theres bleeding assclown kids who make up for their shitty skills with volume of fire. Thats the reality of all the little kiddies who say their rifle is a "DMR", or that they're their teams "Marksman". They're just another cant-shoot pissant who slapped a scope on a rifle and now they're looking for a higher power level, so they can continue to throw a ton of fire at a target, continue to miss, but now when they do hit, they're seeking to cause more physical harm to their target.
I'm going to step down off my soap box now, wander over to my dinosaur (
he's a very sexual tyranasaurus, and he's looking at your car with a little bit of lust. Its probably a good idea that we get out of here before he decides your geo metro is a lady t-rex), and ride off into the sunset.
High Ho Silver. . . Away!
