Slings!

Postby Alien_Hunter » Tue May 20, 2014 9:21 am

I have been using a 1-point sling for a while, I'm not really happy with how it functions anymore though. Mostly when I drop my rifle and switch to a secondary, my rifle flops around on my front side and makes it hard to move with any speed.

Which sling combines the quick and easy use of a 1-point but also lets the user secure his rifle? I had a 3 point but never figured out how to use it.

When you transition from rifle to pistol, you must push your rifle behind your torso. (And/or pull front of sling down so that the QD/rifle is all the way up on your back/sholder. Good for shooting pistol, working on doors, or making sandwiches. It could happen. But as far as running, not so much.) Their are alternatives to this, but they are slower.

1. Instead of moving rifle behind you, hold rifle forend with support hand, allowing you to control it while on the move. This work good, unless you have to reload your pistol at the same time.

2. You could use a single point and attach a QD mount to your rifle forend grip, allowing you to attach it to your support shoulder, muzzle end up.

3. They also make a device that goes on your belt, (forget what it's called) it's a U shaped piece of reinforced nylon, with a velcro strap that goes across the top. You put the forend of rifle into it, close strap and weapon is retained.

Now that being said, slings and lanyards are a double edged sword. Great for holding guns, even better for getting tangled and driving you crazy! You could do what I do and run your pistol/holster on the opposite hip of your primary, allowing you to not have to transition at all, but dual-wield! AKIMBO BITCHES !!! It's also good practice to shoot pistol offhand.

I'm a big fan of these types

takes some practice, but makes your rifle snug.

But in all reality, it's all what you are comfortable with and what you practice with.

My LBT 2500BZ has done a great job of doing what you are trying to do. I have a forward sling mount that's mounted close to the front of my rifle, and the rear is attached close to the pistol grip. If I need to do a quick transition, the rifle will drop to my front, then when time permits, I can use the adjuster to bring the rifle in close to stop it from moving as much.

The magpul MS series slings are really nice, and can be used as a one, or two point. They have a thumb loop that loosens the sling when pulling the thumb loop one direction, or tightens it when pulling in the opposite direction. Very simple and vey fast adjustment.
I use mine so it holds my gun somewhat loosely in the front for most of the time, when engaging its a quick thumb pull to loosen up to get on target. To get my gun out of the way, I pull the sling tight, swing my gun to the back, and snug up the sling again. I can run full speed, or go through rough terrain without my gun flopping around all over the place.
They are made really well, with quality parts, and come with either the locking clamps (MS-3)or with the QD attachments (MS-4).
They aren't cheap, but quality gear usually isn't.

It sounds like the best solution for you would be a quick-adjustable 2 point, or a convertible 1 / 2 point. The Magpul MS3 or MS1 will do the job easily, as will the Blue Force Gear VCAS / V-TAC or 2-2-1 sling. For something more affordable, the Condor Speedy 2 Point Sling is built much like the BFG one, but less expensive.

A 2 point sling will carry the rifle across the front of your body at an angle. Cinching it tight will keep it from swaying much. Loosen for room to shoot.

A 2-1 Convertible allows you to use it in 1 point for flexibility, then switch to 2 point and cinch it for carry/storage.

Thanks commie hunter. Honestly I need to go down to a gun store and try out the different kinds of slings.
