AFTER ACTION REPORT:

The German Counter Attack on Carentan - April 21 - April 23, 2006 - Vaughn, WA

Image

Friday April 21:

Players started arriving around 12 noon and help with setup of the staging areas and the field. At 1600 players begin registration and are issued uniforms and id cards. Briefing happens around 2000 as traffic to the location is worse then expected for several players who didn't make it until around 1930. After briefing a night games starts with about 14 participants. The game is a "light stick" recovery game that runs 3 rounds. Germans "win" the night game winning 2 of the 3 games.

US players had setup camp in the Carentan area and Germans players setup camp around the firepit area in Baker. Most Germans finally get to sleep around 0200 - 0400. It was COLD! By 0100 every thing is covered in frost and some things are coated in ice! I suspect the temperature was in the high 30s at best. Needless to say most players were fairly short on sleep but the 0730 wake up is a welcome change to the shivering!

Saturday April 22:

27 players plus 5 staff players begin the first mission around 1000. US forces tasked with defending their supply depot at CP Baker and assaulting Hill 30 through CP Zwei. 101st units are deployed at CP Dog and easily move to CP Zwei before the Germans can make it there. 29th Infantry begin the round with the Willy's jeep with a mounted Vickers gun. This proves to be an extremely difficult asset to destroy and the Americans easily take their first objective and deliver a devastating blow to the German forces. Several pitched battles between US and Axis forces happen before the Germans start to get the upper hand and slowly begin capturing the CPs that are linked to Baker. The US forces are re-supplied with a WWII Ambulance that arrives on the location around 1035. The Germans maintain a two front attack on CP Baker but the US forces hold the point at the end of the first mission. First mission indexes around 1200 and an admin break and lunch break happens.

Image
During the break, the RC Tank battle begins. There are 3 US tanks and 2 German tanks that begin the battle. German tanks exploit their speed to destroy the US armor before turning on each other. The games ends when Mars destroys the last German tank with his Panzer IV, winning himself a very nice Saitech flight joystick. After the tank round, the raffle happens and several prizes are given away including a S&W 1911 from Speedytoys.com, 8 $25 gift certificates to Airsoft Extreme, 2 bags of bbs, an original 1941 dated US 21-100 field manual, an orginal 1943 dated first aid guide from Battlesim, an MP40 springer from Hooah airsoft, an UTG AK and redot sight from AirsoftPX.com (Sir Plus). The impression contest was won by Kevin (The Italian Guy) and he won an original pair of 2 buckle US boots (size 9.5).

The second mission starts around 1430 with several US CPs in German control including Zwei, Dog, Easy and Charlie. The round begin with 17th Panzer units moving heavy on CP Zwei. 6th Fallschirmjager units were tasked with moving the Pak 40 from the corner of Rue De La Cite and Verdun Blvd to Rue de Villas and Verdun Bld. Once 6th Fall completed this task, they relieved 17th Panzer units who were capturing CP Zwei. 17th Panzer were then re-deployed to CP Charlie to begin to move in on CP Baker and they began to capture the location. This capture was broken by the American forces mostly through attrition although Germans were able to capture the Willy's jeep which they moved up Rue Giesmard and down Rue Holgate to take a defensive position along Rue Holgate near CP Drei. Supplies run short for the Germans attacking Baker and they are forced to move back to Hill 30 in order to defend it from the US who have rallied at Baker and start a huge push North toward Hill 30. US forces push into the German lines in the East and take CP Fumf and CP Vier. They US forces are stopped along Rue Holgate by the 17 Panzer units who have stolen the US Jeep while 6 Fallschirmjager move in on the US's northen front and they capture CP Easy and begin pushing heavily on CP Baker.

US Forces rally on CP Vier and setup a defensive line along it's northern border. A 17th Panzer unit tries to push in on the American held base from the north but is forced to retreat back to Hill 30 once again. 6th Fallshirmjager units try sneaking in on the base from the south but are stopped by defending US forces. While this attack is happening, US units are formed back up and lauch a major attack on Hill 30, this time from the South and the Southwest. While an artillery strike takes out about 30% of the Germans defending Hill 30, US forces do not have enough to overrun the base and decide instead to focus on CP Zwei. A small unit of 4 players (including an Engineer) move to CP Zwei to take the position and destoy the German's PAK 40 that has been defending Bouldvard Verdun, Rue Holgate and Rue Giesmard from US vehicle support. Germans end up taking out 2 of the US Forces attacking Zwei but don't clear the area before moving on Baker. This allows medics to come up and heal the injured US units. US forces end up taking CP Zwei and they destroy the PAK 40.

While US forces are focusing on Hill 30 and CP Zwei, German units begin moving from Hill 30 to capture back CP Drei, CP Fumf and CP Vier. Meeting with limited resistance, a mixed unit of 17th Panzer and 6th Fallshirmjager are able to take back the German CP positions with minimal resistance. While most Germans are attacking the Southwest sector the German engineers move to CP Baker and take out the US Ambulance and pull back as they meet heavy resitance at the CP from defending US Forces.

The mission idexes with Germans losing CP Zwei but they capture the US's CP Easy and CP Charlie - leaving the Americans in a weaked defensive state.

Sunday April 23

Image

The game day starts out with a new combat photographer (Kurt Howard) who ends up taking about 500 photos during the games. The first mission of the day is the RC Plane shoot down. All units lined up and pelted the hell out of the RC plane brought by Schmitty. The plane held up remarkable well and Schmitty's flying was amazing. There were several time we though the plane was going to crash missing trees and other obstacles by mere inches. Finally the rudder control was snapped by one of the neally 5000 rounds shot at the plane. Schmitty still maintained flight control for another 2 passes before it finally crashed!

Image

After the RC Plane shoot out, we moved out to take more pictures of US and German forces at CP Zwei and Hill 30. Dozens of staged photos were snapped, including the Germans using the Pak 40, moving the Pak 40 and the US Forces capturing the Pak 40. After the photo session, the game mission started with US Forces in control of CP Zwei, Baker, Able and Carentan. Rules of engagement changed after CP Baker and only true MGs were allowed to fire on full auto all other players were required to shoot semi auto only. This made a huge difference in they way the play went. While it was "cool" to have a MG with you on Saturday, the semi rules really made the MGs extremely important and everyone wanted to be near them!

Image

Germans started out heavy and split 6th Fallschirmjager and 17th Panzer between the north and south CP positions. Germans quickly take CP Zwei, Charlie and Easy and begin to focus on CP Dog. Most US forces have fallen back to defensive positions at CP Able but they leave a small contigent in the woods behind CP Baker. As soon as German units begin capturing CP Baker an intense fire fight breaks out between 101st Infantry forces and 17th Panzer in the area of CP Baker. Germans take some heavy losses but are able to take out the US forces and capture CP Baker. 29th Infantry MG gunners take positions at CP Able defending the main causeway toward Carentan. Intense fire fights between US and Germans happen along Rue de Guinguette and it takes nearly 30 minutes for German forces to push all the Americans back into defensive lines in the CP Able area.

Image

German forces decide to attack Able from 3 sides. A small flanking team of Fallschirmjager are sent south around CP Able while the remainder push straight through the main causeway exposing the fire from the 29th placed 1919. The rest of the Germans are sent in the north and insert halfway between CP Easy and CP Dog along Rue de La Guinguette. Germans use the MG34 to cover their advance through the fairly open field into the dense wooded area around CP Able.

Image

US forces are able to stop the attack from both the southern and western teams but the northern team is able to push well into their lines where they set up a fortified position with the MG34 and wait for supply to be moved up to them so they continue the attack. The other German teams that were stopped, are re-gened and begin to pressure the US forces again from the South. They are able to take out the 1919 position that was defending CP Able and the emplaced team gets it's resupply and begins to push in on CP Able.

By this time, most US Forces have dropped back to positions defending Carentan. Germans take very few loses as they capture CP Able. While capturing CP Able, the German CO takes out the US CO with his p38! The two commanders then sit (actually lie down) right in between CP Able and Carentan and have a nice little conversation! The Germans are ordered to push on Carentan and are able to envelop the US Forces and wipe them out thus successfully re-capturing Carentan! History has been changed!

Afterthought:

The majority of the German players have been playing as a team for 6-9 months on a weekly basis. It showed. In general they were able to keep cohesion much better then the US Forces. Both teams had great players but the difference turned out to be communication and cohesion. While Germans designated radio men, the US forces used their embedded controller for communication. This proved to be a distinct disadvantage in almost all cases German units were better informed on US movements and attacks. Many of the US players had never played together before and some of them did not have much experience in airsoft. But everyone had huge heart and an amazing amount of excitement and willingness to "get 'er done!".

Many believe that the Germans were highly motivated because of their loss at the last WWII Event Battle of the Bulge in December! This time it's up to the US forces to rally back up and really give the Germans a fight at the next WWII Event (which will likely be early fall). So start getting those US players together! Everyone out there was just amazing and I can hardly wait for the next one!
