Chrono question

Postby Bircher » Fri Aug 10, 2012 10:08 pm

Why is that certain chrono's measure different speeds?

For example-
Chronograph 1 measures your gun at 330
Chronograph 2 measures your gun at 375
Chronograph 3 measures your gun at 290

At sundown 3 my gun measured 315 where as my friends chronograph measured 345 a few weeks later.

different chronograph will have different readings too, its normal to have a difference up to +-30fps when you compare 2 different brand of chrono side by side

That makes it completely unorthadox for fields to say "375 for an AEG" because what might measure as 400 there, might have measured as 350 elsewhere.

if a field wants to put a hard stop at 375FPS using their chrono then it is their right, your crying wont do anything. if you're worried about FPS fluctuation then get a backup gun

like farmer said there are other variables you need to take account, barrel length, barrel dirt, bb weight, atmospheric pressure, temp, your storage condition, hopup setting......etc

the 400 fps on AP is usually a soft limit most event host will allow the limit to go past a few fps, but that does not mean you will be allowed into future fields/games if you pass inspection with a fps over the soft limit

also lower end guns might have a inconsistent compression, and it is also why you should break in the spring of chinese guns because they tend to shoot hot.

I'm not "crying" I'm just saying I think thats a little odd for places to set FPS limits since guns can fluctuate.

Anyhow, Thank you for the answers. I was planning on getting a springer shotgun as a backup because they are cheap and usually last a good while if maintained properly.

Many AEGs vary significantly in what FPS they shoot due to environmental factors. If your gun is not impacted by those (like mine) then it shoots the same every time it is chronoed.

If you want more consistent higher FPS out of yours then you would need to take it apart and work on the air seal through the gearbox into the hopup.

Also please note that shot to shot guns can vary a lot, mostly depending on hopup quality.

I disagree. If your AEG fluctuates a lot, then it is dangerous and shouldn't be allowed. If, every now and then, your gun shoots 420--how do we know it's not the time you happen to shoot someone in the face from 10 feet?

Gun fluctuations, by the way, are a different topic than chrono inconsistencies. Chronos do have some variation, unfortunately. That's why most games will have 2-3 chronos and the admins should be able to say, "Yeah, that one reads low." We can't help the tools we're given in that regard.

But to say that FPS limits are "odd" is just plain dumb.

At the games I'm running chrono/hosting, we use a gun that we KNOW the FPS of to test the chrono. This way we know just how much variation a chrono has. This allows us to adjust our judgement of what the chrono says vs what we know.

The most important rule to remember with chrono. The owner of the chrono will ALWAYS follow what the chrono says. If they use a gun they know the fps of and it says 15fps off what the gun is, the chrono says 15fps off. period. not 50, not 10, its 15. Their game, their rules, their gear they win.

When I was playing paintball I chrono'd my marker at as many chrono stations as I could so I could get an average fps to tweak the fps so I wasnt too hot or too low.
