Cowitnessing magnifier and a red dot

Postby Nark » Tue Jul 17, 2012 1:28 pm

Hey guys
I just got a magnifier for my M4. It sits at the same height as my red dot but the flip-mount is for a real-steel rifle I think cause it's just a little too wide for the rail. I'm using duct tape on the inside of the mount right now but it needs a more "permanent solution" if you will. Any tips or advice from people who have experience in this matter would be helpful. I don't need people saying "why do you have a magnifier for airsoft" so don't.

Dimensions of rails are the same for airsoft rifles as they are real steel rifles. What the problem could be is that your magnifier is made for a Weaver rail which, if I remember correctly, is slightly wider than a 1913 20mm rail. It could also be the mount is odd. Mind posting pics?
Please, I insist.

Its par for the course for some of the replica scope/magnifier/light mounts to be loose on the rails.

Airsoft rails and rail mounted accessories are not held to the standard that real parts are. Therefore they may not clamp properly, and will result in being looser than a $2 hooker.

My magnifier for my aimpoint fit snug on my real AR but was loose as all hell on all my airsoft stuff. So I think the theory that they're the same is off.

I used some electric tape on the rail on the rifle until it was snug(and centered as it tended to sit low).

Thanks I will try that

Just had this same problem with mine. Tested it on both types of rails and found it perfect for a weaver. All I did was swap the rails out with a spare and was good to go. Red dot mount worked fine on both rails so no issues there. Don't know if you have rails laying around or if you care about not having the "correct" rail but it was a cheap fix for me.

If the rails are too wide would it be possible to use slightly longer screws on the scope mount, I know this will trow it off of center a bit but it might work.

I wish it were screws but its a QD base.

It's on the top rail which is part of the upper receiver so it can't be swapped out or replaced unfortunately. I was thinking about getting a picatinny to weaver riser but then I would just need to move my red dot up as well.

I was thinking of just gluing it in place. What do you guys think?

If you care about resale value, I don't think you'll want to glue anything to your rifle.

Post a picture of it so that I can come up with a few more ideas.

Actually, here's an idea that might work:

Throw on some glue gun, and shave it off according to how tight it is, or until it fits.

For example: Bear with me, this is only an idea and it may not work. I'm also going to use my SpecterDR as an example in this situation, I guess.

We'll say that it's a loose fit on my airsoft AR. This idea takes a hot glue gun, a knife or nail filer, or some object that can shave rubber. Preferably, some nail filer or sand paper or an object of equal value.

Basically, lay down some glue until you're satisfied in the crevice opposite from the side of the mount that moves. The fixed area.

Wait for dat phony pony to dry herself out.

Then file down the glue until it fits like you want it to.

I guess that's a solution.

I've yet to try this, because I don't have what you've got and my DR fits nice and snug on my rail.

It doesn't really effect the resale.
I used clue for a flip up sight that the screw stripped out on. You can pick the glue off the metal with your finger nail.

I bet Dan's guns would have a higher resale value if some superglue was used.

Besides, you lose money re-selling airsoft shit anyways.

I hadn't thought about things like Elmer's glue or hot glue. I was thinking epoxy and similarly strong adherents. The hot glue thing sounds like a really good idea.
