well if you are doing a acurate impression of a modern day USMC Squad Automatic Weapon infantry man.....the days of the M249 are OVER. no more box mags.

CMC has just announced and we are happy to welcome the M27 IAR is to be isssued to all SAW gunners on fire teams. to feed this monster they will be issued with quad stacked 100 round fat mags.

if i ever put a kit together i am bringing back the IAR gunner. you might see me in the near future roping out thousand of BB's from one for a team or stack near you.

Because a rifle that is simply an open-bolt version of the standard rifle with no other functional differences is totally a great replacement for a true light machine gun.

hey sorry if i am a little late in the game or in on the news. but i thought it was cool....and if you want to be technical i was the first person i know of to even consider this viable. if i start playing again this is the rod i would take as a support gunner for a ACCURATE REAL WORLD IMPRESSION.

The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) is the name given to a lightweight, magazine-fed 5.56mm weapon sought by the United States Marine Corps, which is intended to enhance the automatic rifleman's maneuverability and displacement speed.

The M27 is based on the Heckler & Koch HK416, which in turn derives from the M4 carbine and Heckler & Koch G36.[15] It features a gas-operated short-stroke piston action (instead of the traditional direct impingement) with a rotating bolt. It is modified with a heavier barrel and includes a bayonet lug. The free-floating barrel is surrounded by MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails for use with accessories and optics. It draws ammunition from any standard STANAG magazine.

That is correct. The contract called for a M4 based platform that had a heavier barrel and fired it's first round from the closed bolt position and the remaining rounds from the open bolt position. All submitted rifle manufactures but one failed to meet the contract. LWRCI was the only company who passed all tests and met all requirements. However, due to a clause that required the winner to currently be a primary weapons vendor, only HK, Colt, and FN were allowed to progress to the final stages. In the end the contract was awarded to HK for a 416 that possessed a heavier barrel than their standard rifles. The concept was to have a weapons system that would be capable of handling a higher rate of fire while being in a package that was half the weight and allow better integration of the fire teams' saw gunners into their teams. However, do not assume this is simply an upgraded M-4. It is an entirely different operating system designed to increase reliability and heat reduction on parts in the actions.

Negitive. it's from the hk416 series. They are piston driven. This is becoming way more popular. I have a safe full of DIs and piston driven ARs, as io have a safe full of LWRCIs and spent time on the 416 series platforms as well as the G36. Totally different guns.

Maybe you're thinking the of the 416 since it's a "cross" of a G36 and an M4.

wow! i can't believe the Marines did it. i just got out and i didnt really care about anything new going on but getting out. good thing I got out cause i love the M249 SAW. I had to carry that bad boy back in 04 in Iraq and man that can really wear you down with 600+ rounds being carried.

I'm curious to see how well a rifle can fire 2,000 rounds in a heated firefight over an hour or two without having serious issues.

Beyond that, shazaam the SAW. I hate those things. Especially when they give you a short barrel for Afghanistan, then add 10 lbs rails to add a single 6 ounce PEQ 15/16 on to the side.
