Here's my 2 cents. Night games are a hoot, here are some observations / considerations. Light discipline. Overuse of light makes you a target and really screws up your night vision. It takes a while to regain full night vision after some nimrod shines his tacticool 300 lumen light in your eyes.
Noise discipline. Your hearing plays a much greater role when your vision is diminished. slow down and listen to what is going on around. Gag and Duct tape the mouth of the team member who must give a running commentary on everything they experience, and for sure silence the damn radios. Radios give away more stuff than you realize, especially at night. Ditto for dangling gear.
Target ID: as stated by others this is a biggie. At one event at our farm, I quietly led our squad into the enemy territory. We used our lights as little as was possible ( hand over lens, small slit of light visible) . Suddenly all hell broke loose and we listened to practically the entire opposing side take each other out in the dark. We all lay there in the darkness and laughed ourselves silly. We easily took out the remainder. They had split up awaiting us in ambush. No communications with each other. When someone started moving, someone else started shooting and we just listened to the show about 25 yards away, lying in the weeds.
One other scenario we occasional use is the " recover the spy satellite" ( 8" pvc pipe w caps and a bike strobe light ) game. One side is the spec ops on foot in hostile country, who's goal is to recover the spy satellite. The other is the mechanized bad guys complete with APC with a gazillion candle powered spotlight / mounted SAW ( talk about messed up night vision) . The element of the vehicle and the spotlight makes for pretty exciting times. The APC cannot go into many places where foot troops can go go, so it turns into a game of cat & mouse / bound and hide. Despite warnings not to shoot out the spot light on the APC, under penalty of having to replace it, it has been shot out ( too tempting a target)
Night ops are a whole different dimension of play. You just need to understand and use the differences.
Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent,
and discerning if he holds his tongue.
