SWAT units do not just use "vests" anymore. In fact many of them are almost set-up with some of the most expensive gear now. The modern era has brought MOLLE carriers to our much deserved local, state and fed SWAT units and some of them are lookin' mighty cool for sure (-:

I have nothing against vests..in fact some are applicable still and work great for their particular use

I don't know what size you are but there are a couple of CAT Technologies (used to be sold through DBT) Citadel plate carrier vests right now on e-bay..just an FYI for you or whoever else is putting together a SWAT type kit.

Cheers!

When you say SWAT and CAT in the same sentence this is what I think of.

SWAT or SRT or HRT or whatever politically correct term they call SWAT teams these days use a variety of different gear / uniforms based on a number of factors not the least being what their budget allows. Don't get too hung up on black or navy blue stuff. Plenty use military surplus camo and some of the best teams (D.O.E. , Idaho) wore gray. Big teams like LA or NYPD have a lot of high speed matching gear and big budgets that match, but there are thousands of smaller county, city and multi-agency teams that get by with what is available to them. Our team wore woodland and did just fine ( free from Ft. Lewis).

Plenty of teams use vests. I had a level 3 entry vest with ceramic plates and snap on pouches set up for shotgun which was my weapon of choice due to the versatility of the weapons platform. Hot as hell and heavy, but real reassuring when going through a doorway. Typically when we had secured the place, the vest would get put away unless it was cold outside or I was on inside perimeter duty.

What look are you trying to emulate? Big city, county ??? The goal is to have a team look uniformly intimidating / anonymous so that the bad guys decide that it is in their best interest not to mess with the team. That is the true goal ( despite TV) that is, to end the incident with no one getting hurt/ shot. I personally know some LE/ SWAT snipers and entry team members that have never shot a person in their careers. ( fired thousands in practice).

Let your look emulate the anonymous / intimidating look, and your good to go.

and discerning if he holds his tongue.
