If this was posted before apologies.

It is common knowledge.

Hush. First, learn to use the caps key. Second, obviously, yes--anything can be modified into a weapon. I bet Seagreen and KA-BAR both could modify a piece of string and some duct tape into a weapon. Hell, even my laptop is easily modified into a weapon (when I hit someone with it over the head).
Seriously, think before you post and then USE THIS KEY.

Also the fact that the replicas in question cannot be modified to fire real rounds; even if you could get the internals of a real AR-15 to fit into an airsoft body, it would most likely fall apart after one or two rounds (that would fire out of the non-rifled barrel). You would have to spend more money on parts for the modification than you would need to buy an illegal rifle.
The BATFE supposedly modified a GBBR to fire live ammunition, but these tests haven't been made public, so we don't know exactly how many rounds were fired, and (IIRC) according to the BATFE, the moment a gun fires 2 rounds with one trigger pull, it's a "machine gun" (oh noes!).

But then again $10,000 can't buy you the amount of advertising for their business that was achieved out of the whole fiasco.
However the situation was unfortunate but avoidable
Why not send one to myth busters? I'm sure this could be a interesting show for it's viewers if they would take on the assignment.
