Investigating the posability for a new indoor field.

Postby MisterTwisted » Sat Jun 04, 2011 6:31 pm

Hello every one I am moving to the area from California and I would like to get some input from every one up here on an idea for a field. I have played at a field called CQB city and love it alot. It is an indoor field that has 60k square feet and mock buildings in it. I would like to hear if any one in the area would be interested in playing on a field like that. Before I serriously look in to securing a facility for the field and insurance I would like to know if there would be a demand for something like that. I would like to start this with the idea of a more tactical game. Something along the lines of urban warfare. Please let me know if any one this this is a bad Idea or not. Thank you for your responses in advance.

I've seen pretty sweet videos of CQB city on airsoftgi. It seems like a really sweet setup and I'd like to start by saying I'd LOVE to see something like that in Oregon. There is something very similar in Tacoma, TacTac or Tacoma Tactical.
http://www.tacomatactical.com/
I don't know how financially feasible it would be to start a large indoor CQB arena with airsoft playing being the sole purpose, however.

In Socal, they have a large amount of players in a series of urbanized areas, right? This is good for this type of setup: high density and it's the only option.
In Oregon, there are a lot of players (I once heard that Oregon had one of the biggest airsoft communities behind Texas and Socal, but I don't remember where or when so this could all be speculation) but they are in low density areas with a lot of public parks (as in forest parks, not playground parks) that people play on, or large bits of privately owned land, usually multiuse (airsoft is not the land's primary purpose; there are paintball parks and orchards and more that have airsoft events on them). People don't like paying a lot of money for games when they can go play elsewhere .

If you still want to do it, then by all means, try it out. However, it will probably be a failing proposition unless you make very careful moves.
1. You will most likely need an in-facility store, preferably one that does online orders. This may need to become the primary focus, with the arena being secondary. The arena could only draw in a lot of traffic 1-2 times a week, so there needs to be a way to supply the players and boost your revenue.
2. You will need to make sure a wide variety of audiences are being catered to. You can't only do tactical games because a lot of the customer base wouldn't buy into ultra tactical stuff. Sure, there could be tactical days, but the mainstay of your customer base would be people just looking to have fun. There would probably be a lot of minors wanting in, so if you decided to let them in, "kids only" days should be considered as well.
3. Location is important. You most likely need to be within 30 minutes of Portland if you want a good showing. The more convenient, the better. I kind of want to tell you to start one in southern oregon so we can get some fun down here ;) But I won't, because it probably wouldn't be profitable.
4. Find the right balance between safety and coolness for the buildings, etc inside.
5. Basically, make a business plan, plan for eventualities, and make smart choices so you don't fail.

Tactac has a handful of buildings, most of which are 1 room. It doesn't really seem like a real urban setting, and there are main shooting lanes. When you have a semi large team, you can pretty much hold down the whole field if you know the right places. How do I know? I was just there. I would like to see a place that has more realistic buildings. Multi-room houses, office buildings, and so on. Posibly even fake road set ups, which would make it seem a lot more like a real place. As many people have said before, "If you build it, they will come."

A large warehouse or field house type building with movable walls ,obstacles, structures to keep it fresh. My estimation of a location just south of the Portland area (Wilsonville?) so you could appeal to the largest amount of people possible. A possible way to make it more profitable would be to allow LE Military training and input. There are a ton of commercial buildings available, which could only help you negotiate a cheaper lease. Hope it works out!

I watch the YouTube chanel Milsim Junkie all the time! Waaaay freaking awesome to play at CQB city. If you can build something similar like this around the NW area I would like to give it a try.

This sounds like a great idea. Like a few others said, 100% tactical themes won't attract to a substantial amount of airsofters, whether they are veteran or noobish.

If I were you, the top things that I would include in the building/ facility/ warehouse or where ever you decide to build this arena, are

1. Movable walls/ rooms.
2. Vehicles in open spaces, to use for cover (movable)
3. Simulation houses/building with more than 1 room.
4. A firing range for people to fix/sight weapons.
5. Theme of the day, such as zombie attack/ anything tacticool Milsim like/ GBB pistols only, or maybe even a game with nerf battle axes & springers.

The point is that, people will become bored of the same theme, or course(arena set-up) after a short period of time, so mixing it up should be a top priority.

There is no market for a 9-5 Monday to Friday airsoft arena. You will not get the draw that will sustain you. The money you bring in, will not touch that which you put in to build it.

GIve it lighting like the arena shown above. Im tired of shooting people in dark as shazaam warehouses, you can't see shit through the mesh masks anyways.
