Hydration Carrier

Postby Wolverine12 » Tue May 31, 2011 4:48 pm

Just wanted to find out what is a really good Hydration carrier that comes with the bladder. I have not gotten a hydration carrier at all and it seems better than packing around bottled water in a back pack.

Have you thought about the CamelBak nalgene-style bottles with the hose? I stopped using hydration carriers after I blew two of them up in the same week by leaning up against something. The plastic bottles hold up to more abuse than the bladder bags.

I've heard good things about the platypus bladders handling abuse, but I don't think they have hoses.

I like Source Hydration bladders. They come with Tactical Tailor hydration packs.

I use a condor pack, but i replaced the bladder with a camelbak one as the hose on the condor one seemed to get too much air every time i drank from it.

I've layed on mine, fell on it, stuffed bags of bb's in there and have had no problems as of yet, but i can see it breaking.

I love my Camelbak Thermobak! Just remember to clean the bladder and let it air out the moisture after use. I use the Camelbak cleaning tablets.

They are pretty great. I got their 2L since it fits perfect in the TT large utility pouch. They do come with hoses.

I've used Source, Blackhawk, the old stock TT ones and Playtpus bladders and my favorite is either the Playtpus or Source. Both are easy to clean (though I've found no need if you only put water in them). The only reason I'm split between the two is Source is made in Israel and platypus is the team mascot, so its a matter of torn loyalties more than anything ;)

I haven't used a Condor bladder personally, but I've seen lots of others leak like a stabbed rat.

Another option is a canteen. I LOVE having a canteen since its small and I don't have to worry about it exploding (not that I have had any bladders explode on me). If you do go the canteen route, look around ebay for a used eagle canteen pouch (I just got a used OD one for 10 shipped) and hit up a surplus store for a 3 dollar canteen.

To be fair, I blew out bladders as a gunner. The bladders rode out the outside of an IBA, and the carriers would get slammed between a SAPI plate and the top hatch plate from my turret. At 70 MPH or so, going over 12" high "speed bumps", which are the only freaking road improvements I saw in two years in A-stan.

I never popped one leaning up against a house, or doing 3-5 second rushes, although I've met guys who claimed to break them that way. So, if you are planning on being fairly gentle with your bladder, you'll probably be fine. If you plan on chucking your gear around, getting slammed into things, and generally abusing your gear and yourself, a hydration carrier may not work that great.

I just know that, after having two fail on me, I generally only carry them in hydration pouches inside backpacks, and don't mount them to my armor any more. And I did enough damage to my gear and myself that I am looking at replacing at least a knee and a shoulder, so use that as your basis of comparison.

Well you def get what you pay for, but as long as you're being careful with it a Condor carrier/bladder combo wont leak on its own, you have to abuse it first. I used to own a couple Condors, and I never had a single problem because I knew I essentially had a big water balloon on my back and I didn't take running backflops onto the ground.

If you have the money though, TT carriers with Source bladders are rugged as hell and extremely durable.

The source hydration bladders are by far the toughest and best bladders. They will not pop on you. back in the day US tactical supply had a picture of their van parked with a tire on one of the bladders full of water.
I have been using them for years and never had a problem.
