Rapid deployment Machine Gun Nest

Postby Steamroller » Tue May 17, 2011 9:14 pm

Ok so I'm sitting here with my brother talking about airsoft and ways of rapid deployment concealment systems and he wants some kind of little hut thing you pull out from your backpack after throwing it on the ground in front of you. It would use plastic or aluminium rods that act kind of like a pop up tent into some kind of wall/target thing that's supposed to be cover. This comes from the same guy who thought he could use a full length M16 for CQC and use it effectively. I don't know help me out here convincing him that he's wrong and I'm right.

Sounds like a sort of camouflage blanket?
You could do the same thing by having a buddy bury you in sticks.

He could carry camo netting or a poncho liner on him. At least with the poncho liner when he gets tired from carrying around his heavy weapon he can curl up and take a nap.

I routinely see people do that.

This isn't halo with its 1337 bubble shields and what have you. Be a man and hit the ground. :)

It does have 360 degree protection and rapid deployment...

I think this is as close to "quick deployable cover" as you're going to get.
As pertaining to the interest of MILSIM (or at least relative realism) this is total BS. Nothing in the real world exists like this...

In Airsoft, we use fields that you can't "dig in" to. Also with airsoft, the realistic times of battle are drastically shortened, so you don't really have time to dig a proper fighting position (they take a while, or a lot of people that are hardworkers, so a no go in airsoft where people come out as a hobby to plink each other).

I see the realistic airsoft version of this as something like he described. CAG/PLA/Eudorus have played around with the idea of these in the past. It can be done. Make sure to set them up correctly with intersecting fields of fire, and realize that it'll take a few of them to be effective, and have at it.

Be forewarned that after a lot of people die up against your defenses, they'll complain about them on the forums. ;-)

It's actually slain comrades, they're called Russian sandbags for a reason

I personnally would see an issue with this system. It's not realistic and it's no different then a few players just grabbing a huge piece of fabric, holding it up in front of them for bb's to hit, and then calling it cover while walking across the field.

It sounds like cheating to me.

Try using the natural cover and concealment around you. It will make you a better player and will eliminate any crys of foul play.

Your not talking about that stupid tarp wall that took troops away from where they were needed are you?

I tried designing something similar to this years ago, but not for airsoft.

The design was a small pouch worn between the shoulder blades that, when activated, popped a small kevlar bunker around the wearer.

I saw some of the self-erecting tents the army was testing. They basically looked like camoflage donuts. When you hit the center of them, they popped out into little pup tents. I figured I could make one out of Kevlar.

I ran into a bunch of problems, though. First, Kevlar is heavy. And to get it to stop rifle fire, it's REALLY heavy. Carrying that much weight every day for something you aren't likely to use is a pain in the a$$. Second, in order to get something like that to pop quickly, it's probably going to be a stone-cold phony pony to fold back up. This means that you are probably going to have to abandon it in place and recover it later. Which is full of fail in fluid warfare.

The best I could come up with was using an airbag initiator to get the pop (but that's a bad idea, since those things are basically bombs). Build the bunker out of Kevlar sort of like an inflatable play structure. Have an overflow vent to allow it to puff out excess pressure, both when it first pops and then when it gets hit, so that it can use air pressure to allow rounds to slow.. And a couple of CO2 cartridges and a pressure sensor to reinflate it after it starts taking strikes.

Weight looked like upwards of 80 pounds, and that is just not going to happen. I guess if you could build something like this, film it stopping RIFLE strikes successfully, then you might have an argument for using it in airsoft. Maybe. Assuming you are using the same system that you used for testing, anyway.
