IR laser?

Postby ManDownMedic » Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:34 pm

So I was interested in purchasing/making an IR laser to go with my nightvision and wanted to see what everybody thought about them? Does anybody have experience with them and are they really worth it?

P.S. this is my first topic post so be nice :)

I'll start I guess...... If you really want an IR laser most that I've seen run around the 2k mark and up. You need a decent set of IR glasses to view it (that means GEN III) which is another 2-3k. Then theres the issue of the fact that no one really plays at night, and most of the CQC fields are no longer in operation. Most IR lasers are also not eye safe, which means that no one really wants you running around shining it at them and in their eyes causing damage without their knowledge. In short, its not worth it for airsoft. It sounds good in concept, but the reality of it is that you will never use it enough to feel like you got your moneys worth.

I do get the whole people might not want them shined in their eyes thing. I wouldnt either, but i do play alot of what many people would call "backyard" games and most people there would be pretty chill with it as long as i didnt do it on purpose obviouslly. And we play alot of night games it seems like.

I did find this IR laser "modules" though:

Im not one for the jibberish specs and info, but what about these? they do say for gun sights.

There are class 1 (eye safe) IR lasers on the market in DBAL AND PEQ style boxes now. However they run a minimum of $500+. You do still need the NVGs as well at Gen II or better. Those run $2500.00 and more and thats for the POSs. These IR laser sights are built by the same company that makes the PEQ-2 and PEQ-15 for the military and are built for REAL firearms.

Traditional IR laser sighting systems like the PEQ-2s for example are federally regulated and will with out a doubt blind you. These are no joke, not toys and have no business in a hobby where you point fake guns at your friends.

Lasers in general are not recommended as an airsoft sighting system in general due to safety issues. You may not be "one for the jibberish specs and info" but those specs dictate if the laser is eye safe. I suggest that you study up on what those specs mean and do your homework if you want to go down that path. Also remember that your friends may be fine with it but this community is made up of people who do have professions that require solid eye sight and would not look kindly to having lasers of any kind flashed in their eyes.

Or, you can buy an IR laser diode for like 40 bucks and throw it in an airsoft PEQ box. Not as good as a sooper-dee-dooper fancy one, but good enough for airsoft.

I've seen IR laser diodes go for like, $10 shipped on Ebay. Just gotta find the rest of the stuff to make it work and shove it in your PEQ.

I bought an IR laser from Riddick a while back for either $20 or $40, I can't remember the exact cost but it was cheap.

It is very clearly visible with Gen I NVGs.

Not a big deal man but generally its better to do your own homework. Then you know for sure if the info you are getting is solid or junk. I go by my rule of "rarely trust and always verify".
