Dropleg and Vest question

Postby Hutch » Sun Feb 27, 2011 7:28 pm

I have a tac-Vest and a drop-leg Pistol holster, I am VERY annoyed with needing to access the pistol from my leg, and was wondering if there's any way I can keep my drop-leg on my vest without spending money. (If I have to spend money, I found a pistol holster that you attach to your vest via loops.) Help me out?!

If you have MOLLE on both the holster and the vest, then it shouldn't be a problem. Do you have links to pictures of your gear?

Cut off excess straps and zip tie it onto the vest. Not the greatest looking solution, but it fixes your problem.

My guess is that a dropleg isn't going to have molle unless its on a leg platform.

But I bet its a tornado holster or a universal. If so you're SOL and will just have to buy an offset quick draw or a retention holster to attach.

If it's a SERPA holster you could get the molle/strike kit for it.

I don't think somebody would buy a SERPA and then complain about not spending money...

Good point.

Another good point: Did this post help "AlphaWolf BBA" at all, or offer him any good advice?

It was jester.
My advice would be sell current vest and holster, buy crossdraw.

Sell pistol, buy better vest maybe?

The point of a secondary is to have something to transition to if your primary goes south.

Chances are, the OP's primary is tied to him somehow. My money (without having seen the rig in question) is on some form of sling. Typically, this means that in order to transition to a secondary, the primary is released from one or both hands and hangs somewhere from him. Chances are pretty darn good that wherever it hangs will block a crossdraw holster, or it will take up space that would be better served by carrying magazines for the primary in that spot.

The secondary should be carried in a manner that allows it to be accessed quickly. Drop legs are really popular because they do just that. Cheap droplegs, or even good ones fitted poorly, cause about as many problems as they solve. Chances are, the OP is better off either readjusting or replacing the dropleg they have rather than trying to vest mount it.

The good news is that they can discover this on their own. As Jester suggested, there is a pretty good chance that the OP can zip-strip it to their vest in the place they would plan on mounting it. Then, a little work with transitions will show whether or not it is useful to carry a pistol there, or whether it is a better choice to replace the dropleg with one that fits the OP better.

Personally, I don't run a secondary very often when playing outdoors. And when playing indoors, I run a SERPA dropleg. I highly recommend them. Guys that I respect also recommend Safariland droplegs. No-name brands, soft holsters, and cheap knock-offs tend to either fit poorly, drop mags, or be uncomfortable. You get what you pay for.

+1 to Steve

I finally got a SERPA drop leg platform and used it at LOWII. I forgot it was even there (until I went for my secondary, darn minimum engagement rules for bolts...). It didn't move, didn't pinch, and didn't drop the mag. If you are willing to drop some money, get a SERPA. THey make a bunch of different mounting options from hip, to drop leg, to MOLLE.

I literally just picked up a serpa dropleg replica (CQC burst) from airsoftglobal a week ago and from what I've experienced, my actual serpa and my replica function with the same degree of flwalessness. I only changed out the crappy strap-stops on the dropleg panel so it would stay tight on my leg.

Guess what? It was only thirty bucks with the drop leg mount before shipping.

I would suggest picking one up for yourself, OP. They are cheap and work well.

I have extra holsters that can attach to MOLLE, what color are you looking for.
Also: most leg holsters can have the leg straps undone and have it attached to your vest.
