Simulating Razorwire and Hesco walls

Postby Darius137 » Tue Dec 28, 2010 7:29 pm

I was wondering if anybody had a good idea of how to simulate a hesco wall.

A hesco wall is basically two walls with cloth and wire holding in a bunch of dirt, acting as portable walls. Afghan conflict based games would include a lot of hesco, sandbags and 2 stor guard towers for FOBS/COBS/Bases.

For razor wire, I was thinking we have coiled metal (no razors) which we would not allow people to pass through.

old hurricane fencing, or heavy duty chicken wire.

as for razorwire, almost every field in the PACNW has it....we call them blackberry bushes.

What about for the walls getting some hay bails and covering them with the cloth and cheap wire fencing?

i am pretty sure that razorwire without the razors....would be called wire.

What I mean is that I don't think there is regular wire that is similar in thickness to razor wire.

Not necessarily the thickness, but the same shape and roll to it. Like KA-BAR's pubes but not as thick. Also made of metal, not shame.

Oh god, I can see where this is going.

Anyways, how permanent do you want these walls? Do you want them to be solid like a true Hesco wall, or just to last long enough for a weekend Op? How many walls, or what size wall do you want to build?

Wouldn't be very realistic, though would simulate the same idea. Not quite the same for me, unfortunately.

I would, however, tie strips of orange engineering tape every few rolls in the wire to mark it as a safety hazard, which is not totally outside of reality.

Long enough and solid enough to not fall apart over a 1-3 day OP, with the base of operations for patrols in a FOB environment.
'
The inner layer would be HESCO walls and around the gate areas, wooden shacks, sand bags galore and razor wire.

I like that idea, with a way to:

1) Make it modular (like real HESCO)
2) Make it fold out (for storage)
3) Have a base that has something in the bottom to put weights (sandbags) on to secure them down
4) have a top basin to fill with sand to simulate it being actually full of dirt, without the hassle of moving that much (a shit ton) earth for a one weekend (or even one week) event.

Razor wire I was thinking would need:

1) Coiled, to simulate the real wire + be portable and stored smaller
2) be smooth, with a secure way to keep the edges from cutting people (don't need any tetnis or Limpy dying at his first real OP).

OK, looking at the ideas, I think you could get something really spot-on with a wall of hay bails with a landscape fabric wrap, and some type of chicken wire or similar fencing on top. The bales would be heavy enough to anchor it down, but easy enough to set up and take down. Plus it is biodegradable, and depending on the field you use, they may just let you leave it.

For the razor wire look-a-like, I did some Google-Fu and found a variety of steel rod, specifically hot rolled steel rod. I have never worked with it myself, but it looks like you could get in a coil the rough size of rolled razor wire, and you could just stretch it out and get the look of razor wire. Price, that may the hard part, as steel isn't the cheapest right now, and shipping/transporting/storing it may be an issue.

Just some thoughts for you! I do like your thoughts and ideas though on this, and am looking to see where this goes.

I don't like the idea of razorwire, as I can see some ranger wannabe fucktard (read: me) with his bolt cutters snipping a hole in your boundary lines, costing you money and shit. Hesco walls, though, could be done pretty wasily with, as was previously suggested, landscape fabric and heavy duty chicken wire, just folded/built in the format of the actual Hesco walls.
