Radios

Postby Falcon7 » Sun Nov 28, 2010 1:14 pm

I'm looking for a radio to use on the field. Preferably one that will be compatible with others if my teammates use other brands of radios and has a decent range. I would also like one that can take a wide variety of mics/earpieces. Also, if it didn't have the annoying little push-to-talk button that would be helpful. I'm a radio n00b.

Is $100+ a typical price for these kinds of radios?

If you want quality, yes. Headsets are something to not skimp on. Your radio will be useless if your walking around asking, "what did he say?". Radios are just as important. Moral of the story is, don't be cheap. Not saying that you need to buy a $100 mic. to be the most tacticool guy out there. Like every thing in airsoft, check quality before price.

Your most efficient and trustworthy bet is to keep it simple yet rugged.

Get a mid priced FRS/GMRS radio (Motorolla) and an earbud plug with PTT. For airsoft you'll be able to do what everyone else does save for a few select teams.

Links would be nice :D

These look promising:

Can't tell if they have the double headset jacks, but they come with headsets so it shouldn't matter.

Midland typically uses double jacks in their radios - those specifically do, if you look at the radio in the charging cradle you can see the jacks on the right side just below the antenna.
Midlands and Motorolas are a good starter into the world of radios, after you get an undestanding on how they work, transmission and reception distance etc, then you can always work your way up to other radios with bells and whistles.
Some looking around can net you stuff with some trick features - I used to have a set of motorolas that had a 'privacy' channel feature that scrambled the transmissions unless you had a similar radio set to the same 'descrambler channel' (there were a whopping 2 to choose from!) It's the main reason I got the radio I have now - I'm a bells n whistles whore so I got something with lots of goodies on it after getting tired of lost transmissions when working long distances.

It shouldn't matter. The ones you just linked to include headsets so you have everything you need right there.

Those midlands are nice. That is what SOTA used to use before we switched to ICOM's. Those packs are nice since they come with two radios, headsets and chargers. Like Dan said they are what 95% of airsofters would need.
