FPS for pistols?

Postby cptcrazy » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:18 pm

I am new and am looking for a pistol to buy, some of them can shoot really F***ing fast. I looked at the FPS limits and see that it limits AEGs and bolt action, but I dont see pistols.

My question is, do the fields put a FPS limit on pistols?

oh by the way I am looking at a G&G extreme 45, they say it shoots over 500 FPS

FPS limit is typically 350 fps because a hand gun is normally only useful for close engament distances and CQB. Don't know about the G&G.

Pistols typically have the same velocity limits as AEG's.
Unless otherwise stated by the event coordinator, or whomever.

Pistols shoot too short distance.

Pistols are usually not chrono'd because there are really no pistols shooting hot and the shots are usually in semi-auto.

Yeah what Darius said.

I have never chrono'd a pistol even though my KWA M9s can fire as high as 360 fps in the right weather.

CO2 pistols are usually chronoed (at least I chrono them at PSC games since they can shoot 400+). As for downgrading them if they are shooting too hot, the easiest way to do so is use a less powerful gas. So, for example, if your shooting 400+ with green gas/propane, then use duster/134a to lower your FPS. The downside to this is that duster/134a usually lacks the power to cycle the action on most metal slide guns.

Its really down to who is running the event on what FPS pistols can be at.

As for the G&G "1911", I'd avoid it. I've heard upwards of 500+ FPS which is over AP limits and then some. If your looking for something that will work and is easy to get stateside, I'd look into a KWA pistol. If your in the "money is no object" group, look into getting a TM/WA pistol and the related upgrades to make them more green gas friendly. Yes they cost 2-3 times more than KWA guns, but I've had amazing results with my TM pistols over KWAs.

If you get this, don't bother bringing it to any game I host. (That goes for anyone with a CO2 pistol.)

Normally pistols aren't chronographed because back in the day they all ran on Green Gas - which rarely ever clocks over 330 fps. If you were to use a pistol with a higher velocity outdoors, 400 fps would be the limit at my games. Anything semi-automatic or fully automatic is limited to 400 fps for an outdoor event.

With new products on the market, however, it might be a good idea to start chronographing pistols. Unfortunately that means a longer wait in the chrono line.
