Airsoft safety discussion. Post here with questions about laws and safety concerns.

We've discussed the subject of face, namely teeth, protection. I was perusing a back issue of Airsoft International the other day and realized in England, possibly most of Europe, they require minors to wear full face protection while playing Airsoft.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I think it's a damn good idea.

I like the idea for a couple different reasons.

However, since I'm not a minor, not the parent of a minor, nor do I host or promote games...my opinion doesn't amount to squat.

I sure wouldn't be bothered to see a new rule like this enacted though. ;)

We should also raise these children ourselves if we feel their actual parents aren't doing a good enough job.

Your thought is a noble one, but in truth, they're not our responsibility. If we start writing policies that assume responsibility for minors at our games, we open ourselves up to liability for every twisted ankle and bloody welt airsoft has to offer, not to mention perceived verbal intimidation from all the shit-talk that goes on.

If kids are worried about their face and teeth, they'll wear a mask, and they often do. If their parents want to make them wear a mask, let them do that.

Perhaps it would be a better idea to just tell people to avoid shooting at the face as a common courtesy? Yes, of course we all assume the risk of getting hit in the face when we go out, and sometimes the face is the only thing we can shoot at, but I'd say that when you have the choice of shooting someone in the lip or in the torso, just go for the torso out of common courtesy. It's bigger and easier to hit anyway.

Shooting people in the face just for the sake of shooting them in the face and causing more pain is, in my opinion, not sportsmanlike at all.

I cringe when people stick their heads out, so i burst, move to a position where i can see there whole body, and try that.

Most people aim for the body out of courtesy, but it happens because hop ups arent perfect. I have split someone's lip with my m24 when i was aiming for their nuts. I do not think this should be a rule, because I already see people wearing face masks, and that tells me if people are that worried about their face, they will wear one on their own.

I couldn't agree with you more, "afatcow". I have never intentionally shot anyone in the face, and I never intend to. However, accidents do and will happen, and in the heat of a firefight, blood pumpin', adrenalin firing... things happen. I have been shot in the face at nearly every game I've attended. Thus, I wear facial protection, and have no issue.

I was just curious what people might think about requiring minors to wear full-face protection.

Best regards,

I don't mean to be redundant, but the theoretical question I'm posing is requiring, specifically, "minors" to wear full-face protection. Eighteen and above would not apply.

Again, just a thought.

Cheers,

It's been the accepted practice in airsoft for aslong as I've played, that you allways aim for a person's torso. Unless your only shot is of a person's head. You never intentionally shoot for the face, if you can shoot another body part instead.

Not sure when head hunting became the preferred method, but IMO it's a tool move.

I can't see requiring it for minors working out. I can see event promoters adding a line to their waivers just above the parent / guardian signature that advises parents that facial scarring / tooth loss is a legitimate possibility and that junior should be encouraged to wear face protection.

Chances are, if parents are not requiring kids to wear full face masks, it is out of ignorance rather than stupidity. Informing them of the very real consequences should help fix the situation.

If a promoter wants to require it, so be it. If they don't, they don't. I like the way that works.

Parents are buying these things for their kids and letting them play in the front yard with NOT EVEN eye protection. People are bleeding stupid. Forget requiring them to wear face masks, start with the parents and ban them from reproducing in the first place.

Whatever happened to individual accountability? People need to be responsible for their own safety.

As an aside, if the only target you present me with is your head, expect to get shot there. If you're hiding behind a tree/bush/bunker/plywood castle/massive inflatable hot dog and only sticking your head out when you shoot, don't phony pony when you catch a shot to the noggin. Do I like doing it? Certainly not. But don't expect me to go out of my way to accommodate not shooting you in the head.
