TANAKA BOLT ACTIONS

Postby betty white » Thu Sep 09, 2010 8:54 pm

I've wanted a bolt action for a while and i finaly came across the one i want (Tanaka Kar98k... its a trade so im not spending money on a gun im not used to) although...

1. i dont know anything about gas bolt action rifles, except gas is terrible in the cold.

2. i dont know anything about Tanaka's either. (quality, performance)

any and all help would be appreciated on this subject.

Not sure what the hopup is like in the K98, but my M700 had the shittiest designed hopup I've ever seen. Three or four pieces, all of which liked to fail.

King Arms has a replacement part for the M700, not sure if it's compatible, though.

I know a few Tanaka KAR98 owners, one of them is Vidar but he doesn't usually check the boards.
I'd say it's one of the best damn rifles out there, even in the cold. I've seen them shoot fine (given time to warm up every now and then) out in the snow. It's construction and quality is incredible!
If you can get it, i'd say go for it!

He's right, I've seen Vidar and his Kar98 in action, he's pretty beastly with the thing. Cold or not, it worked for him.

no i doubt your crono information is way off there betty white.

noone at a AP game is allowed to field such a rifle. matt would not allow it.

you must be mistaken.

Actually, it was chronoing exceptionally hot, he didnt play with it. (assuming we're talking about vidar's, which was the only tanaka kar98 at summer slaughter)

I've got a Pre-Pre Ban Tanaka M700 that has been around this community longer than you with only minor hop-up issues due to other people using it improperly. The Tanaka Hop-up for the M700, could be the same for a KAR98, is very precise but very fragile, if you don't know what you are doing, yes you can break it, but thats your fault, not the rifle. Don't give Tanaka a bad name because you haven't taken the time to learn to use it properly.

Criticizing Amos on the use of a Tanaka M700 is like trying to criticize Noah Webster on his spelling.

Don't get me wrong Paladin, I have no doubt that the rifle could be tuned to be amazing by someone who is experienced with gas bolt actions. But the multi-component hop system is extremely finicky and not something that most novice players would want to fight with.

The input was directed at a player new to gas rifles.

I had the post-ban version. Not sure what changes were made aside from the PCS bolt.

given the fact it was 95 degress outside it's not hard to figure out why.

Just like cold, heat plays a major contributor in the output of a gas system. Generally cold days you experiance low fps readings and hot days you will have crazy fps reading. green gas is not a very stable power source. This is why some like using hpa or CO2 with regulators to control it in a modified setup.

Ka-Bar when he calls in to question a rifle's "shortfalls" due to his lack of knowledge not actual manufacturer's defect it is called for. I didn't insult Amos, I said that he was incorrect in blaming the rifle's design for his issues. So no it was not uncalled for. He was giving information on the negative about a rifle that he was possibly using improperly. It would be the same thing as telling someone who drove with the parking brake on all the time that they were wrong in saying the gas mileage of their car sucked. And as the only useful post had been how it was basically doomed to explode horribly I was giving refuting information that I owned one for over 11 years that was still in working condition. But thanks for saying how you "weren't impressed" and that my name was "Skippy" because that was really called for since you are so concerned with people being insulted.

There are several different versions of Tanaka Gas Rifles. I believe the KAR98 there is only three, Pre-Ban, Ban, and Post-Ban. The main differences are the combination of PCS Bolt and Tapered nozzle. The main thing is if the rifle has one, or both of these and which it has.
