Land Warrior 1.0

Postby congofal » Tue Aug 24, 2010 11:32 pm

Here's an article from the ARMY RESERVIST magazine published in October of 1959 describing the Soldier of the Future .
As you can see , there are a few ideas that where ahead of it's time , i have owned this magazine for a few years and it's cool to see how some things evolved over time.

That's one straight from a 1950s bad scifi movie looking rig.

Screw foxhole diggers, I want a jump belt.

What the heck are "welded" combat boots?

"Foxhole diggers" = TNT.

That's one ugly mask.

Welded combat boots means that the sole is heat welded onto the boot instead of stitched or nailed on.

Ed, if you keep your eyes peeled down by Ft. Lewis its pretty easy to come across some of the modern landwarrior kit. None of the electronics, but a lot of the nylon...

Some of that stuff is not too far off honestly. We do use Night-vision, We do have Infrared scopes, we do use small individual radios, we do wear a vest. The mask and gloves pictured are more similar to our NBC gear, but not far off, obviously it's not a full gas mask. The boots, yeah that's a weird one. The Fox Hole diggers looks like cut down bangalores, which would make sense for the era, they had no idea science would develop an inert explosive compound like C4. Jump Belt is obviously a stretch, and that one is probably chalked up to SciFi, there was a TON of testing in the 40s and 50s on jetpacks though. The Nazis were REALLY big in to developing it before the war.
