For the level that most 13 year olds play at, actually for most players in general, Midland or Motorola 2-Way FRS/GMRS radios are the best at an economical price. You can get a pair of Midlands for around 40$ and a simple earbud headset for only a bit more.

No problem. I like mine a lot, they came with a charger and battery pack (great until a puppy chews through the cord making it not work -.-) but I believe take AAA batteries as backup.

Best comm gear, or best cheap comm gear?

I've been using an iCom F4001 for the last few months and don't know how I put up with my Motorola Talkabouts for so long.

They work well as long as you take care of them.

And Icoms are amazing from what I've heard, but outside the price range and need of 99.999% of 13 year olds

The Midland ear plug headsets usually run ~$30 for a 2 pack, but I wasn't all that impressed with them. The speaker which connects to the ear plug will pick up all the noise of you running around (bouncing around on your gear, moving along it). For about the same price you can get

Keep in mind though, with both that style of headset and the ear plug style (or "secret service style") they will limit your hearing on that side, which is what I hated the most with those.

If you don't want your hearing hindered, I'd look into a handset like this
http://www.ebairsoft.com/element-h250-m ... -2589.html

I have a small handset that I've been using for about 3 months and haven't had an issue of it "giving my position away", though I'd suggest keeping your radio easy to get to so you can adjust the volume as needed.

Those also have a mini plug on the bottom so you can plug in earphones if you chose (like ipod ones for example).

I would stay away from the chinky Sordin/Comtac copies. They have active sound canceling (or so they say...), but I don't trust the quality of it. The last thing you want is a flashbang going off next to your head and instead of it canceling the sound, it amplifies it. Plus they don't seem to be made all that well.

There are more expensive options for comms, but I'd keep it simple till you can invest the time and money in what you need. You don't wanna drop $500+ for a headset and radio only to find you don't need it.

People use them in place of frags if the game allows. Much easier to get people to notice than a tennis ball ;)

I'd hate to be in a building and have them go off without earpro.

I would avoid the China H-250s, they offer absolutely zero benefits over the standard speaker mic linked in the same post, and are actually worse IMO.
The belt clip on the H-250s (real and replica) sucks..most speaker mics have nice ones that also rotate. You also dont have to remove them from your gear to use them..

There is a US based seller on eBay called Kawa mall...he sells handmics for all sorts of radios for around $20 or under. They are good...
