Skirmish - Basic force on force. Few requirements for gear. Low cost.
Mini Op - Structured to simulate modern or period combat instead of an equal sided shootout. Low cost. Short duration. Minimal gear requirements.
Operation - All day, or several days. Strict gear requirements. Structured to simulate modern or period combat. Contains missions other than movement to contact. Use of built up areas, vehicles, pyro, (but not necessary all three). Higher cost.

Backstory is secondary to having a well written OP.

Both definitions deliberate the definition sufficiently, I think.

Well, the way I see things, airsoft always ends up being a glorified game of tag, even if it's advertised as 'mil-sim'. IMO, zombie games are every bit as legit, if not moreso than games that tout themselves as milsim.

Also, Catch's notion of things is basically how I see it.

I'm going to go ahead and name zombie ops and other things as just F*cking around with airsoft guns and 50+ people

I'd categorize them as a "theme" event.

Dude, the idea of airsoft as milsim is a joke. Once you get past the kits people are wearing, every similarity with real combat goes out the window. Let's be real for a second here.

It's a bunch of folks running around in the woods with toy guns.

Besides, I'm pretty sure that Catch meant "realistic missions" more to be missions that are actually plausible, rather than the typical wild-goose chase.

I would have to disagree about the milsim part, the military use's airsoft as a training tool, so it must have a high value of milsim to it. just saying.

Pickles, a bunch of folks running around the woods and a bunch of soldiers/sailors/Marines/Airmen running around in the woods is a little different. The expectations are not the same. When I'm the CO for a side at an event I don't expect my people to fight a serious war correctly, I expect them to play a good game. When taken seriously by everyone involved, Milsim is like being in an amazing movie. When you get a bunch of kids in tennis shoes and playing Counter Strike out there, Milsim is a game.
LARPing in moderation can be fun. When you go to a zombie game and the zombies are yelling and grunting as they charge in waves, you have the moment of, 'Oh, s**t. This is really cool and extremely disturbing at the same time'.
But live action D&D in the park? That's too much.
Yay for insomnia.

I'm not sure that's the right attitude to have about it. If you give up before you even try, then yes, it'll never happen. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. There's plenty of events with strict rule sets, chain of command, props, vehicles, etc. They are mil-sim by definition because they simulate combat in a military structure better than other events. If we focus on our objectives and stick together to work with our squads/platoons then games wouldn't degenerate into a gaggle of unorganized crap with kids lobbing shots from behind trees all day.

My opinion:

OP: Operation. A game planned like a military Operation using a planning process from a real world military. To do this, we usually end up doing US style missions, as that is what we know. To have a real OP, you need to include an Operations Order.

Mil Sim: It simulates the military. This can be as simple as you having everyone in attendance with "the look" to having realistic situations, such as in a city, using vehicles, or a realistic mission and Operations Order. Most Mil Sim games should be OP's, though there are plenty of militaries and conflicts out there that are pretty unprofessional.

Themed: Any sort of event that takes you out of reality with a set goal, such as zombies, previous dates (Manicotti was set in 1967) or whatever you can think up (a game based on GI Joes, or Space Marines)

Skirmish: Any sort of game of airsoft where you're just out there playing. This includes most of what people call OPs and Mini-OPs, no matter if it's 20 people or 350.

A Rose is a Rose . You can disguise a turd but it's still a turd .
I see that no matter how much planning you do , As soon as you say game on it's a whole different game . Comes down to You got a gun , I got a gun . And if we see each other we shoot each other . I can see that for some that after so many years of playing Airsoft you can get bored and want to have something more . " kinda like when I was married " But Airsoft is Airsoft . The gun comes with a high cap and it's designed to use a high cap . With the higher end guns like KWA , They don't play well with Mid caps . But I do like the way your thinking Catch . We should try to get some kind of classification so you can determine which kind of play you want . Me I just want to safely kill my friends and get off the damn couch . 8)
