I'm looking for what the communty thinks the differences between a Skirmish, Mini Op and a Operation are?

Skirmish: Loosely put together game, with small missions and objectives to just have fun
Usually free or $5-$10 if held on private land

Mini-Op: Short back story and outline with a few more rules and tougher objectives than a skirmish
Usually free or $15-$35 if held on Private land

Operation: Well thought out back story with specific restrictions on camoflage uniforms. More realistic missions and objectives. The use of vehicles, pyro technics and...... Patches
$35 to $200

Your definitions pretty much summed it all up Kevin.

What about zombie ops and other misc things? Resurrection was well thought out but isn't realistic like the description for OPs says.

Seems about right. I'll also add that skrims are usualy free, mini-ops are usualy cheap/free and OP's tend to be slightly more expensive

IMHO:
Skirmish - Basic force on force. Few requirements for gear. Low cost.
Mini Op - Structured to simulate modern or period combat instead of an equal sided shootout. Low cost. Short duration. Minimal gear requirements.
Operation - All day, or several days. Strict gear requirements. Structured to simulate modern or period combat. Contains missions other than movement to contact. Use of built up areas, vehicles, pyro, (but not necessary all three). Higher cost.

Backstory is secondary to having a well written OP.

I ask myself why is the designation so important in the first place. They are all airsoft games with rules and some form of gameplay structure.

The tag or title name is the most unimportant aspect of the whole thing. So why do we need to care. Unless I'm missing something truly extravagant here.

Rick - it's important because there are so many games now that we are having to look for new ways to categorize and classify them within our forums and our calendar system. Somebody who is more of a laid back player might prefer to attend skirmishes, somebody looking for strict mil-sim might want a serious OP.

I completely agree with your statement Matt, now that I am only able to go to one game a month it would be nice to have some categories so I can quickly figure out which game to go to.

Also if there are rough guidelines for what each size of game should contain, hopefully we will stop seeing every skirmish have an OP title in front of it. :p
