I am going to be building something that requires a very long wire harness. Most likely 2-3 feet long. My question is: for a wire system that long, what would be the best gauge to use? I was planning on using 16awg, but should I consider 14awg? I am not extremely familiar with the science behind conductivity, but I do know that larger gauge (size) will provide less resistance. I'm just not sure if something with a much larger gauge will end up being counter-productive.

16 Gage should be fine.
16 gage wire adds 1 ohm resistance for every 244'
14 gage wire adds 1 ohm resistance for every 387'
2 or 3 feet of wire isn't going to have much effect.
The biggest determining factor on wire size should be the amps your system uses.
16 Gage wire is typically rated for 20 Amps or less. Most 14 gage wire is rated at 25A at ambient temps.
