Poor Man's chrono?

Postby Whan » Sat May 29, 2010 3:39 pm

A while back, I swapped the spring in my G&P m4 with one from a Dboys KAC PDW. I know China guns tend to come shooting pretty hot, so today I did a "Poor man's chrono"
http://www.airsoftretreat.com/reviews/s ... product=71
involving a pepsi can. So my gun shot through both sides, but failed to penetrate the bottom of the can (Although it quite nearly did). Would this mean I should be okay, under the 400 FPS limit? According to this ASR review, I should be okay, but according to a redwolf airsoft guide, it's a bit iffy. Anyone else have any experience/input to share?

my advice is to find a real chrono. my 380 fps gun shoots through a can similar to yours. is should be ok to use

If if failed to fully penetrate the bottom of a can I wouldn't worry about it. Go to an event and chrono it there, and be confident that it will be under 400 fps. If you want more assurance, try some more cans just in case you happened to use an abnormally thick one. Or just go to your local airsoft shop and ask if they will chrono it for you. If they want your returning business, they probably will.
I'm a "fair weather" airsofter. I only play in the pouring rain, freezing cold, or broiling heat.

+1 for a real chrono.
Nothing worse than making the early morning drive out to a field just to be sent home for shooting too hot.

Of course, having a backup aeg on hand is an easy, although spendy, solution.

For the can chrono, here is the stats (From RedWolf Airsoft):

ONE SIDE
(BB remains in can after penetrating one side) 290 to 310 fps

All figures are approximated based on tests with an 0.2g BB. Varying weight of BB may alter results as the above FPS values only apply for 0.2g BBs. Using 0.25g BBs will sometimes allow you to penetrate a surface even at the lower FPS rate. All FPS measurements chrono'd with a Combro cb-625. The range of FPS above accounts for minor structural differences between cans which can require a little more FPS to make the mark.
BOTH SIDES
(BB makes it straight through and exits on the other side) 350 to 370fps
BOTTOM (CENTRAL) 420 to 450fps
BOTTOM (EDGE) 450 to 480fps
TOP (EDGE) 480 to 510fps
TOP (CENTRAL) 520 to 540fps
