General Consensus on Ballistics Shields?

Postby Smitty » Thu May 06, 2010 6:49 pm

I was looking into making a Ballistics Shield for myself for Airsofting. This project would be more for fun than anything else, but I was wondering what the general consensus is for Ballistics Shields in airsoft matches? I realize it is different for every game an such, but what is the overall feeling towards them, before I build one?

Now, when I say ballistics shield I mean a plywood shield with a curve (like a real shield) with a small plexiglass, or equivalent, window in the center. I would be weighing down the shield to the realistic weight for a ballistics shield.

I personally say they should be used for CQB ONLY. I can't stand it when some 12 year old has a plywood shield the size of a shoe box and going HURF DURF U DIDNT HT ME I HAS A BALLISTC SHIELD HURF DURF.

I may be wrong here, but real ballistic shields aren't designed to stop rifle rounds. And since this is MILSIM, and we're using replica rifles...yeah, there you go. Once again, that's just what I've gathered.

It's considered Mobil Barrier . And frowned upon . Like how many hits can knock it out . There may be a place to use it but not at skirms or big opp's . Mostly causes people to either cheat or to be called cheater . A lot of controversy . But try it out see how it works out for ya . 8)

Ballistic shields get used at CQC events, but nothing outdoors, seeing as how they are typically lvl IIIA armor, they can withstand pistol caliber fire but would be worthless against rifles.

I say if it is realistic weight then you can use it, but if a rifle is fired at it then it counts as an out. It would get really heavy to lug around...but thats the point.

Since probably 90% of people carry rifles, then 90% of hits would be outs.

and what are you going to do stop whenever it gets hit to see who hit you and if it does in fact count?

Level 3 ballistic shields are rated to take six 5.56 assault rifle rounds (not sure on specifics, that’s the best info I could get to research mine). The downside, they weigh around 50 pounds.

If you bother making one, go the whole way with aluminum plating and whatnot- otherwise you'll look like a kid with a plywood shield with a handle. Spec wise you would want around 24 inches wide (so it fits through a standard doorframe) and ~45 inches high.

Give me ~10 minutes and I can get some pictures of mine up.

To true...which is why we don't have them, unless it is a CQB.

I had planned to bolt aluminum sheeting on the front of it to make it look more professional. and the specs you listed G36 FTW was around what I was going to make it, so I was on the right track there.

As far as the feeling towards it, that is what I figured. I wouldn't be using it outdoors (that would look kind of ridiculous anyways), so CQC would be its main use.

Also, thanks for the info guys. I didn't want to be THAT guy.

Yes, but most are only rated at lvl IIIA, and on top of that is someone going to have to count the number of rounds they have been hit by?

And what if someone shoots them with a bolt platform, an M14, or an M60?

the logistics of keeping track of all that simply aren't practical.

I was just referencing the highest grade shield’s specs, and you’re spot on.

That’s exactly why ballistic shields ONLY belong in CQB.

EDIT: never have more than a gbb pistol with you, or you're automatically frowned upon by every single play ever...
