Building an IR laser / PEQ

Postby STU » Fri Aug 28, 2009 9:08 pm

I decided to start a thread for this so I wouldn't hijack Variables thread about the Eyeclops NV goggles.

So far I have purchased THIS 780nm 5mw IR Laser Diode from ebay. Total cost: $12 shipped.

I have taken apart an old junk laser that came on an entry level AEG and removed the laser diode from it in preparation for when the IR laser arrives. The laser holds 3 small watch batterys that are 1.5v each making it a 4.5v cell, which should run the IR laser just right. Cost: Free, most of us have one laying around somewhere :D

Once the laser arrives I should have more to post up, but until then here is a video I found on Youtube of a 5mw IR laser viewed with night vision.

I wonder if the IR laser would still be visable through nv if you had your IR illuminatior on.

Yes it would...just because you have one IR source does not mean the rest of them dont work.

Good question, I hadn't thought of that. My IR light is a 5w LED bulb I put on my surefire like THIS one.

I would imagine that the laser would be a much more bright focused point of light when viewed with NV but now I'm curious if the IR light would wash it out.

Anyone else have experience with this :?:

I guess I will find out for sure when everything is put together and working

I was looking at those, but I have no idea what the focal point and the beam dispersion on those is. granted for airsoft use you don't need particularly long range, but it'll be nice to see how it works out once someone has tried it.

I figured for $12 it was worth checking out :D

As long as it is a visible point that I can see with my NV on to fire at that's sighted in with my rifle it'll get the job done. The idea behind getting an IR laser was that it was damn near impossible to use iron sights with the NV monocul I made, at least until I can find a way to swap it over to my left eye instead of the right.

Honestly though, it'll probably only see use at S4 for fun and around my house when I'm bored

I can't remember who it was, but there was someone who picked up and PEQ15 in order to convert it into a working airsoft version of the real thing.

I haven't checked to see how the project is coming along, but something like that would be nice to have since as you said, it very hard to use the weapon sights when you are wearing NODs

I picked up a Dboys PEQ box and took the dremel to it. Got the IR laser mounted in it running off of a 9v battery with a pressure switch. Made room for the IR illuminator and its ready to be housed in the PEQ, but gotta make a run to radio shack for a way to house the 2 CR123 batteries to power it.

Anyone got any old flashlights, lasers, or pressure switches laying around hit me up. I got some ideas :D

I'll post up some new pictures soon of the PEQ. I've been testing out the unit using the NV goggles that came with COD MW2, they are surprisingly awesome :D

I would love to see you results! Please post them up when and if you build such a thing.

Pictured next to my G2 for size comparison. I cut off about 2 inches from the PEQ Box to make it not so gigantic and to house the batteries better.

Left side is IR laser, right side is IR LED light from my surefire.

Right now the laser is on the pressure switch, but I think i'm going to put the IR light on the pressure switch and hook the laser up to an on/off button type switch.

That is an awesome setup. And it's way cuter with the short PEQ.

I almost bought MW2 just for the goggles.

I still may just pull out the IR laser and get one of those PEQ boxes I was looking at when I was down there the other day. I think that, along with my surefire with the IR light may look nicer than the setup I have going right now. Just depends on how easily the laser goes into the other peq box.

I think you can still buy the goggles, or at least very similar ones. Spy Planet, yadda yadda.

I bought MW2 with the goggles, and now thanks to STU I'll try building one of these PEQ boxes. Now to figure out a way to mount the goggles to my IBH with a Rhino Arm...
