Airsmithing tools

Postby Sleepy » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:32 am

So, I've decided that I need to start fixing guns for myself. I've already got a few projects coming up, and I might have few more coming over the summer. I'm already planning on setting up a desk in our new spare bedroom under a Wall of Guns, so adding a toolchest isn't a huge leap.

But for the life of me, I don't know what tools would actually be useful to an airsmith. So, I'm calling all airsmiths: What tools do you have? What sort of things do you keep handy?

i have repaired my friends guns from time to time, ALLEN WRENCHES!! AND LOT'S OF 'EM! also do your work over a white canvas so it's hard to lose track of the tiny black pieces. keep some silicone with you, if they have never taken there gun apart then some lube will help. that's my 2 cents

All I can say is just say no to power screwdrivers.
There's a difference between a person who has a screwdriver and a person who knows what they are doing.

Allen wrenches, delta ring wrench, all sizes of Philips screw drivers, small punch pins, solder gun
and shrink wrap. Shims, wight lithium grease and 100% light silicon oil is important also.
It also helps to have a internet ready computer near by when you are starting your air smith career for
those moments. Hope it helps and good luck.

Torx wrenches. They're annoying as shazaam, but most gearboxes have a few of those damn Torx screws.

I can burn you a copy of the Airsoft Guide DVD's if you want, Sleepy. Just tell me when you want them by.

Hex wrenches, SAE and Metric. Torx wrenches. Screwdriver with Philips and flathead bits, and magnetic extension. Headlamp. Needlenose Plyers. Mallet. Delta ring tool and or Channel locks. Camera. Electrical tape. Soldering iron.

All this stuff is for doing it right. I can do a quick and dirty on a gearbox with nothing more than a screwdriver.

That is a fairly comprehensive list. I have this, and would add a small screwdriver with interchangeable bits for those tiny screws you just can't get to. One of those small hand-held electric screwdrivers is what I have, though.

What about a small tablemount vice and a Dremel kit?

Dremels are good if you are doing any sort of modifications. If you are just doing internal work then I can't think of an instance where you would use it.

As far as a Vice. Same deal, but I never justify putting anything in a vice because I'm worried it will damage the finish.

I have used a dremel on multiple occasion, specifically when parts are too big or different for the gearbox. For instance, the madbull trigger I bought would not close the circuit in my HK416, so I took a dremel to it.

To second Tim, I once took apart an AK using a swiss army knife, all the way down to the gearbox opened and all electrical parts out. It was awesome. Classic!
