On topic- That's going to be a great tool Karma. I didn't see in the post, what size camera did you use? How far can you see clearly? The picture of the chairs is maybe five feet. I guess that's all you'll need though.. five feet. Just wondering.

I'll try and get some better photos of the screen using the camera at range. It seems to be great playing with it indoors. Definitely large enough to look into a room and clear it.

UPDATE:

Today I performed a full burn-in test of the system, to test stability under heat/lack of ventilation as well as to establish the hard and fast numbers for run time.

PC: 5.5 hours
LCD 6 Cell: 5 hours
LCD 9 Cell: 8 hours

Both the PC and LCD have field-changable batteries. The LCD is wired to a 10.8v battery from an HP laptop, which is housed in a cannablized HP laptop battery compartment, as shown below. The unit is stored in the cumberbund, in the rear, so there is no additional pocket required to house it.





I removed the janky multicam cozy/hydration bladder hybrid that was housing the LCD because it was bulky as hell and held together by staples, which aren't particulary effective. The LCD is now attached directly to the vest using a bolted-on modified sling and clip mount.

So it's essentially a land navigation tool? Having ONE of these may not be that practical depending on who that one person is and what remote inputs are out on the field. This is only a suggestion, but it might be worth exploring. If it could receive remote video... live video being the preferred type, then dropping some coin into creating a system to capture/transmit video might be worthwhile. The ground commander has the central system, while reconnaissance units and element leaders can transmit sitrep and video. Assuming it could be tied into GPS, the central system could track the locations of the individual ground units.

I'm sure you've considered that already.

Pretty slick. If you're looking to up the runtime, there are some better battery solutions out there, but for "What I had laying around", nice work.

My concerns would be the first time I decided I need to be "Down!", that LCD screen is history. Is the laptop strong enough to support weight if you were on your back? Of course, this is definitely a commander's tool, not something every swinging cod is going to carry...

Re video -- we have the technology. It's not even terribly expensive. Amateur radio does fast scan television, or D-STAR hardware supports a 128Kbps wireless network link over a decent chunk of territory. Of course, this hardware is relatively expensive...can also do texting and a variety of other message solutions.

Also, locators are totally do-able. Would cost about $250 a unit to make with COTS hardware, though. Plenty of range (I've got one that puts out 5 watts, another that can do 65 watts). One way link, but still great for a "Where did I send them?" or "Who's the closest relief?"

UPDATE!

It helps to have friends in high places. My buddy Adam over at Ground Breaking Images made me a custom Multicam vinyl sticker sheet (well, several actually) that I then cut and applied to the LCD. The vinyl is engineering quality, waterproof, and UV coated to resist stains and fading from dirt and shit on the field. It also adds a layer of water resistance to the LCD panel.

I also purchased a Pharos GPS USB receiver which you can see covered in multicam vinyl on the shoulder pad of the vest. This is what feeds the satellite coordinates into my mapping software, which will have game objectives plotted as waypoints or pushpins on the map. Check out the shots!

Is there a way to make your system interface with GPS enabled phones? They would obviously need to be within range of a tower to send a signal, but most fields are close enough (snipers den for example). You mentioned something about using Google map's latitude, is there a way to use that with your rig?

Beyond Latitude, not really. The PC had a bluetooth receiver so it can communicate that way to phones, but at least in terms of tracking other phones on it (to track troop location) there isn't an easy way beyond latitude. There is some software out there that will let me track phones, but I have to use their interface and it requires a 3G connection to run, so many fields would render it useless. Plus, its like $7.99 per phone per month that you want to track (used for monitoring employees, kids, et cetera).

I'm interested to see how the GPS fares under the tree canopy. It may not even get a signal, making the whole thing moot.
