Rhodesian Army loadout

Postby Colosseum » Wed Sep 23, 2009 6:44 pm

Hey all,

I recently got my Rhodesian camo bush jacket in the mail (direct from South Africa, mind you... lol), and I've been putting together a Rhodesian Army loadout.

This goes with my new JG G3A3 that I'm going to paint in that godawful "baby poop" camo scheme they used.

Image

I've also gotten a reproduction Rhodesian FN magazine chest rig from a guy in Oklahoma City that custom makes them. It goes along with some South African Pattern 70 webbing to complete the gear part of the loadout.

I really wish there was an affordable FN rifle I could get a hold of. The G3 *is* period correct, but the iconic rifle used by the Rhodesian troopies is the FN/FAL... not the G3 (which was used mainly by police and guard force units).

I've been unable to get pants or a camouflage flap cap in the pattern, though. I'm currently just using South African Transkei pattern pants with some of those cheap Condor jungle boots... works well enough.

I'll post some pictures when I get a chance!

That camo scheme makes me cry. Those beautiful rifles. The G3 and the FN-FAL are so beautiful. They look like clown guns. :( But have fun, it's you're money :p

That's exactly what I first thought when I saw them... then I read the history of it and its utility in combat and it started to grow on me.

Whenever my damn G3 gets here (ASGI shipped it today), I'll camo it up and take some pictures of the whole loadout, as promised. :P

G3 is going to be the more economical choice. The King Arms FAL's are nice but run about $250 on wgcshop, and the spare mags run $25 a pop. I can't imagine Beran passing by this thread as he's into the Rhodesian merc thing too.

the camo is goddamn hard to find, as is "correct" period 70s gear. some of the fireforce units used the british pattern 58 web gear and chicom stuff as well as the more commonly issued rhodie vests and chest rigs. the rhodie vests are stupid easy to find these days, although they are slightly different in layout and color. the FAL, G3A3, AK47 and the occasional M16A1 were all relatively commonly seen battle rifles between line units and the more elite outfits (in that order).

as for FALs, ive owned all three that are currently available. the King Arms was alright, but i bought it broken and never bothered to fix it properly, so i traded it to panzerfaust for something and he got it up and running. i never was terribly happy with the feel of the rifle though. the Classic Army SA58 is a fantastic gun, but is based on the newer FAL style rifles by DSA, so while it is a FAL it is not period correct. there are also no midcap or standard mags for it, only hicaps. the STAR L1 is a damn nice piece, it comes semiauto but is easily modified to full or you can buy a piece to change it over. the STAR feels almost like the real thing, and has an extremely long barrel, which is great for accuracy. mags are difficult or expensive (or both) to find for all three.

ive got the start of a period correct fireforce loadout with the old 1970s style rhodesian pattern bdus, M58 gear, and a chicom AK chest rig but ive found it far easier to create a modified "modern" look like a south african mercenary holdout from the apartheid days might look today. a soft armor vest with a chest rig on top of it and off the shelf belt/dropleg gear as needed. add in a "clean" weapon that could be easily purchased on the open market (like AKs, HKs, SIGs, etc) and it makes for a pretty neat modernized variation on the old rhodesian look. ive also found a similar pattern thats just different enough to look new called "Safariflauge" on the web. pants are easy to find, but jackets are a phony pony.

kind of like what variable is sporting here: http://www.airsoftpacific.com/album_sho ... ic_id=3729

also, i don't care if it is the way they did it, i wouldn't paint my rifles like that. it may work in the african bush, but its not going to help you any in the pacnw.

A buddy of mine is from Johannesburg in South Africa. He knew a guy over there that sold Rhodesian stuff, so I contacted him and bought one from him. $70 for the jacket plus $40 international shipping. Don't want to repeat that for the pants. Lol.

It's my understanding that the Rhodesians used any webgear they could get ahold of, but sometime during the 1970s they received a lot of Pattern 70 gear from the South Africans.

Here's another picture of a camo'd rifle:

I don't mind painting a $140 airsoft G3.... :P

Also, if you want I can direct you to the guy who custom makes the Rhodesian FN magazine chest rigs. They're not cheap, though, mine cost $75 but was worth it. I believe he's also starting a Fire Force vest project, but not sure on that.
