WW2 British Airborne Impression... work in progress

Postby LettuceHead » Tue Feb 03, 2009 12:20 am

Thought I'd post some pics of where I'm at building my WW2 British Airborne impression for Jump to Destiny. I'll post more pics as it all comes together.

So far I have:
- Denison Smock (Pattern 2, late war)
- Pattern 37 Belt, braces (suspenders) and utility straps
- (2) Bren mag pouches
- Pattern 37 Water Bottle and web carrier
- Large Pack and L-straps
- Scrim scarf (not actual repro but close)

Wish the pics were better but my camera is a bit wonky tonight.
I've always loved Denison smocks from the old pics I've seen. This is repro from What Price Glory of the Second Pattern (post 1943) style. This would also be late war as the earlier ones were more of a tan base color for the operations in North Africa and the Italian campaign. As the focus shifted to northwestern Europe they switched to an olive base. My webbing is well used but the price was right, some stains here and there but I figure that gear looked pristine for about, oh, 15 minutes once boots were on the ground. I might dye it green to look as if it were blancoed (treated with preservative). The scrim scarf, now known as a sniper veil, was issued to almost all troops and it was a point of pride for Airborne to wear it smartly around the neck.

Note the 'Donkey Tail'. this flap went through your legs and snapped underneath the front to keep the smock from riding up during the jump. The glider troops typically cut this off and it was pretty common for the paratroopers to cut it off later on the ground because it could be annoying, so many surviving issue smocks are missing this.

The Large Pack was typically not worn into combat, they had a smaller haversack for that I don't have yet. Note the position of the water bottle... it is a royal pain in the a$$ to remove from the web carrier! This was the issue location for it, though. I guess they considered feeding the Bren LMG to be more important than a quick sip of water. The L-straps of the pack are designed so that the pack can be worn normally without the webbing or it clips to the braces just above the Bren mags so you can take it all off in one go. The utility straps anchor the L-straps and crisscross over the back of the pack. Soldiers used to carry the helmet or other gear while on the march.

Still needed is the maroon beret w/ badge, Battle Dress pants and shirt, new Pattern 37 gaiters (mine were too small :( ), ammo boots, some odds and ends and then... the replica. That's going to be the spendy part...

we can convert up a Enfield ;)

And as soon as I find the right gearbox, I'm going to start on the STEN. I'll become my "number one project", although I might settle for a Thompson if I have to, for Jump to Destiny. I put in for that time off . . . . . don't know if I'll get it yet though.

Let me know your size in battle dress, I have tons of canadian BD tops and trousers for sale.

Let me know if you are interested.

Our group used to do 1st canadian para and most of us have made 3-5 jumps in our WWII gear.

Helmutt - Thanks, I'm really looking forward to the event!

Alex - I eventually want to get a Shoot n Scoot Enfield but converting one would be fun right now too. I'll look for parts at the gun show in two weeks.

Starkist - PM sent

All I have to add is:
Get a Spike bayonet with frog
E-tool
Ditch the large pack and the use the small. Find a grounds cloth and cup. As for the Canteen, find another yoke strap and attach the carrier. It will be the best way to get to your canteen/water bottle. Neither of the carriers are any good at releasing the canteen.
I have Brit Modern day mess tins for $12.00. They are just like the originals. Minus the lead soldering that made the troops sick. For $90.00 I can whip you up a para helmet. In your size.
Send me a pm if you want the helmet and the mess tin.
The tail on the Smock, I thought was a beaver tail. Maybe it was a Canadian thing.
Yeah, Alex, Starkist and I were in the 1st Canadian Para.

The same tactics and drill are used today as was used in WWII. We took what we learned in WWII Reenacting and applied it to airsoft. This may also provide you the opportunity to reenact modern Brit too/Scot..

John Boy... PM sent. thanks for the tips and pics :)

Shopping for a small pack right now. The large pack came with an Ebay bid for half my webbing. I'll use it to haul everything to the spawn point or base.

A few sources I've been studying from British perspectives referred to it as the 'donkey tail' (wonder if the Gurkhas called it a 'goat tail' :?: ) Just a continent thing, I guess.

Honestly, I am gearing up more for airsoft than true reenacting. I am slowly shopping around for the E-tool, bayonet (which I don't think belongs on an airsoft field) and such but for now my goal is a reasonable impression that doesn't involve shamefully damaging vintage items.

Agreed but if I hit the field I don't want to see someone using a m14 un-altered and in Vietnam kit will we are doing WWII.

John - thats one of the reasons why I've been talking to you, and McNair, trying to get you guys to work with us on getting WWII airsoft in this area, up off the ground. We-all know the costs. I can't see any of us being anal about if someone's wearing a 3-button undershirt with creame and brown buttons, rather than a 4 button shirt with brown buttons. But I can see us-all working to correct people who just don't have a clue - educating, guiding, and such.
