An example of cost for an FJ
Modern black combat boots $30
FJ Pants $80
FJ blouse $80
Smock $80
Helmet $80
Webgear $150
K98 $250-300
Side cap $25
Barrack gear $50

That is a SOLID start and we would only like you to have half of that for your first event, we will loan you the rest (especially the rifle, we usually have plenty)

Later you could spend $500 more over the next year to get the right boots and all the little things.

To do GI it’s about the same but you need a M1 Garand, which bumps the cost up. The good thing is the guns go up in value as you use them, they will never go down in value.

One word of advice is DO NOT buy anything without joining a unit first. You’ll just buy the wrong shit and be pissed.

Other costs

Event
$35 for event
$25 for food (we all eat together with 1944 type food and rations, and we eat well, ask the guys from our unit)
$35-60 for blanks

Between both airsoft events and BF events there are about 6-8 events a year, more than one every other month.

WWII airsoft has always been something I'm deeply interested in. Unfortunately money holds me back.

But if i had as much money as i liked, i would totally rock the downed b-17 pilot kit! ;)

Well, just ordered my 2nd Pattern Denison Smock and have received my Pattern 37 webbing (belt, braces, L-straps, Bren mag pouches and large pack) and an unissued water bottle and carrier. Waiting for my anklets to arrive.

I've got a schedule and budget to pick up Battle Dress pants, beret w/ badge, boots and M1A1 and I'm all set for heading up to Battlesim's Jump To Destiny on May 24-26th.

Who else is in? There's a serious event in reasonable driving distance with plenty of time to get ready...

I just might put in for those days off - but I'd have to build a Sten. And I have my Canadian/British gear.

Say - Lettucehead - did you get my PM?

To get back to the original question
"What is stopping me from doing WWII Airsoft?"
Lack of Tanks.
...
...Okay seriously, its lack of, or limited availibility of American uniforms/weapons.

Time, money, lack of venerable equipment, and games being so far away.

Distance would be the biggest factor for me. But as soon as there is a games closer I'll have a kit and accent ready to go.

It use to be lack of interest, but after seeing the Long Winter '09 photos I am interested.
But now money is keeping me from doing WWII.

I would want to do a Russian load out. But my PPsH41 is a phony pony of a project. The cost and lack of the guns I really want keep from doing it. The fact that I don't have the money for one loadout even keeps me from doing CQB, Which would really just be a smaller gun and a better gas mask. And that it would be hard to do the Afrika korps in Oregon :P
And the lack of tanks and air cover leave out a part I would want. The reason I don't mind this as much in modern is because it can b explained in briefing why there re none (the "bad" nation is to poor, and the "good" team is a strike team with no outside help) and I can't quite see that for WWII airsoft.

If you guys did both reenacting and WWII airsoft it makes it seem cheaper. You get two hobbies out of one kit.
