I do have to say, for the most part, our radio net stayed pretty clear.
Before the game, there were some issues that got worked out, such as not being able to ID who else was on our channel, which was resolved through a nice quiet talking to.
During the game, there was a point where I had to pull a Thompson "Quit fuckin' with the radio! I swear to god!" Someone kept keying the mic-tone button, was a real issue, but there was enough gap that I was able to communicate.
That being said, our channel was clear. I was able to talk to my patrol point, Ollie, and get something useful back. There wasn't much in the way of tactical chatter, just keeping up on what the other was seeing. It would have been nice if I could communicate more effectively with DCI back at the CP.
I think, however, that our recon team got lucky. I've heard examples of mic-spamming, and the more players we have, the more problems we have. There was maybe 150 people at this game, and we had little to no trouble.
BTW, time for my official AAR. This will not be kind, and if you don't like what's said, you can cram your opinion up your a$$.
Night Before.
Good times were had by all, except for an apparent issue with some illicit drug use that was handled in a very, quiet professional matter. Complements to whoever handled that, but I'd like to never hear about it in the the first place. Also, epic fire jumping. Good thing we never set that tree on fire.
Pre-Game Briefing
Seems that Mugabe and Bemba had an excellent set-up briefing before hand. Kabila on the other hand, just kind of congregated in a corner and bullshitted. On a team leader lever, I'm not happy. We had basically no lead-up on our objectives. Then we just found ourselves on the field. I spent the better part of an hour and a half the night before on the hood of the car planning my teams actions, and then found ourselves in the wrong damn village. The map showed us nothing of a village where we wound up being at. Speaking strictly as a squad leader, I'm not satisfied with how this one went down.
In-Game
That being said, I'd say this was a good one. Considering we as a faction were massively outnumbered at every turn, we never felt like we never had a chance. We fought like tigers when cornered, and refused to leave the big village alone. Two of my team members, on two different occasions, were alone and outgunned, but refused to just die and leave. At one point, we pretty well had Bemba surrounded. They could only go straight up Hamburger Hill.
One thing we bulldogged on was the Russian Tower next to Bemba. We refused to leave that thing alone, and would not rest until we took it, and then held it to the last man. At one point, myself and one guy were under there. I had a pistol at the door, waiting for some idiot to come around. Anyone who tried to get down there would have gotten two in the chest.
Then the dumbest possible thing happened. Ka-Bar, why the shazaam did you leave the CP? I get it, you were bored. So was I alot of the time. Your job was to stay alive. It was our job to die to keep you alive. You left cover, and what happened, they cut off your bleeding head. Go figure. I spent 15 minutes on the radio and on the run, trying to find you. Then I found out you were dead. Outstanding. Very satisfying.
I didn't see, or hear about, too many hackers, and the admins dealt with them quite efficiently. It's just one of those things that happens.
Considering I went from having myself and a couple kids to a full-blown platoon, I was pretty happy. I was able to take some teams where we could put some pain on. I led a team up to the village, which quickly became a tug-of-war. Wolfdog tried to hajji some folks while I borrowed his M4. That didn't end well, but I had a good time, and now I want an M4 of my own.
I also managed to scare up half-a-dozen recon missions up the logging road, which was not held half as well as Bemba could have. I don't know if it was off-limits or not, but no one said anything to me or my team. Coby, nice job running point, keeping things tight and under control. Wolfdog, thank you for the guidance on where to flank Bemba. 20 yards further, where I wanted to go, and we would have been camping the respawn.
We managed to finally puncture their flank and put some folk under the tower to keep some heat up. We managed to lase a few targets, which is why I've decided that whatever rifle I buy next, I need to put a green laser on it. That thing was better than a marker flag on the target. Someone loaned me a speed-loader when my pistol went empty. Whoever that was under the tower, thank you, and I've forgotten your name.
Post Game
The raffle was a decent time. It was about time we got some of that Grid 18 rain we all remember. I won more ammo. Also, Pulsipher, stop winning shit. I didn't realize how badly I needed a cigarette until we started packing up.
Highlights
1. My first pistol kill of the day. My rifle was dead back at CP, all I had was my pistol with 3 mags, and 4 frags on me the whole day. I went through a whole can of gas, and half a bag of ammo. We sent a 6-man team up the hill to assault the bunker. The rest of my team was down the trail, I was kind of out by myself. My plan was to have the other 5 draw fire on the left while I snuck in from the right and kill some folk. Instead, they saw me first, so I was circle-strafing the bunker. Last mag in, blapblapblapblapblapblapblapHITslidelockYEEEEEEEEEEEAH! That remains my favorite kill of all time. I walked back to the CP with my head, and my pistol held high, slide locked back.
2. After we finally claimed the tower, a couple of us noticed a guy walking down from the road behind us. The chatter went something like this:
"Who's that?"
"Dunno."
"IDENTIFY YOURSELF!"
"Bemba."
"What'd he say?"
"Did he say Bemba?"
"KILL 'IM!" And 2 saws, 2 M4s, a pistol, and an AK unload on this poor kid.
Conclusion
Overall, I had a pretty good time of it out there, the weather was decent enough the whole day that it didn't shazaam with us too much. Three factions kept things interesting, and at a certain point, I was walking around looking for something to shoot. It did kind of feel like a glorified skirmish, though. Next time, I'd like to see more people actually show up. The bigger this one gets, the better it'll be. I'd like to come back next summer when SA is done with their renovations they keep talking about.
Speaking of which, I don't think the buildings are as bad off as people make them out to be. I was up in the North Building of the main village, stomping on the deck, and didn't feel too nervous being up there, but the admin asked me to step down anyways. The small tower at the Kabila CP could use a railing though. I wanted to post up there with my EBR, but knew I'd slip and fall and die, it was kind of slick up there.
Yes, I know. They're dangerous. The guy who went through the floor was on my team, and I nearly broke my ankle last time at SA, in that same building. These things happen. Caution is the better part of valor up there. If I could have posted up there with a sniper team, we could have put the pain on Bemba the whole day. It's a perfect spot. Please, SA, if you do any real improvements, remove that stinking ramp, though. That is a deathtrap, right there. Keep the building, reinforce it, build it better, I don't care, but nix that ramp.
Kudos
Riddick, thanks for the ammo. I still have a bag. Guess I bought more than I needed.
Ollie, I'm pretty excited to run with you again. You can be my point-man anytime
Shorty et al, thanks for showing up and bringing your SAWs. Next time, moar battery! Hope to see you at SW3.
Wolfdog, you are a beast! Next time, though, more Hajji! Thanks for running patrols with me. Boosted my confidence levels, having you out there with me.
Admins, as always, thanks for making this go smooth.
See you on the field!
The King Of al-Talk. Hey, at least I'm not a troll.
My dog wouldn't know what to do with a duck if she caught it, but she's cute. And hates Mexicans. +1!
