wire mesh goggles

Ok so I read a lot of threads on mesh goggs. Some people like them some dont. And as far as who to get them from, Riddick is the man.

With that said I want to make my own. What type of mesh should I use? Can I buy it at home depot? I went to ACE and all I could find is alum/nylon screen door mesh.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I went to a Magnolia HiFi and asked for some speaker mesh. They gave me a good 2 foot square that I've used to mesh out two goggles, two gas masks, and I still have some left over. They gave it to me for free, but your results my vary.

You'll need tin snips to cut it, though, this stuff is tough.

Don't use mesh goggles if people are using cheap BB's or glow in the dark bb's. These tend to break apart on impact with hard surfaces.

In my experience, cheap mesh sucks. (makes me dizzy which is hard to do).

So if you do, get nice ones. But I suggest that you don't get them period, just upgrade your current lens.

I don't see why everybody is so gung-ho over mesh nowadays. As Catch22 noted, some people use cheap bbs(or bios) that are prone to breaking on impact. If you don't like the fog, get a pair of shooting glasses and some Fog-Tech.

i have been using mesh for about 2 1/2 years now at every game and even at strike zone. In that time I have been hit in the eye section once.

See when I move I make sure I keep my gun up to my face to engage targets. Very little of my face is exposed.. I never keep the aeg at my hips when moving like so many players do..

Is there any kind of regulating body that says what constitutes a "legal" mask. For example hockey has HECC, I don't know what it stands for so don't ask, which has to certify every helmet before it is allowed to be worn.

I know that somewhere, someone has made their own goggles, be it out of mesh or their own version of a lens, and had their eye shot in a game.

Not sure about mesh, but any lenses that are used in airsoft MUST be ANSI z87 rated. You can pick up a pair at any shooting or hardware store. Not sure when it started, but as a community, we have all agreed that z87 eye protection is required. If you've ever taken a wood shop class, its the same rating as the goggles in there.

Hrmmm, how did you mesh the gas masks Nic?
Add a ring to the lens area?
I'm going to purchase a mask in the future and this info comes in pretty handy.

Mine have bent sheet metal holding the lenses tight with several bendable tabs. I lifted enough of them up to pull that ring of sheet metal off, and the lenses are seated between two folds of rubber. They pretty much pull right out after that, with a little wiggling. Then I bent the mesh to the same curvature as the lens, drew an outline with a paint pen, and cut it out with tin snips. Reinsert the mesh "lenses" and put the metal ring back on, rebend the tabs tightly into place and you have removed every shred of effectiveness from that gas mask.
