Bravo Sordin Style replica headset

Postby -Shifty- » Thu Dec 30, 2010 12:28 pm

I've been looking at Sordin style headsets for awhile now, reading reviews and doing my research, but I wanted to ask anyone who's had experience with them, how it affects outside noise. That's the one bit of information I can't find. Obviously Sordin's are full-ear coverage, and I don't want to buy a headset that cuts off all outside noise.

Sordins don't cut out outside noise, they filter it. When the volume gets above 82~ Db, then it gets cut out. It will still process other sounds, like people talking so you can still here that. They have a volume control on the side that lets you amp up the outside noise to levels that are just on the edge of normal hearing. They are affected by wind which is annoying, but its to be expected.

That being said, thats how the real ones work. The chinky ones (Element, Z tactical) kinda work that way, but aren't built very well. I've heard of all sorts of problems with PTTs, microphones not working or being wired backwards. You can try them, but don't expect them to be as good as the real ones ;)

Also, if you find used Sordins on ebay, they are usually the low impedance version, which is meant for DoD (RE Army, Navy, AF, ETC) radios. Civilian radios like the kind we use at games, are high impedance. What it boils down to is using a low impedance headset with a high impedance radio makes you very quiet, you nearly need to yell so people can hear you normally over the radio which kinda makes them moot.

If your coming to Snowmageddon or any other game that I'll be at, come find me and I"ll let you test drive my TCI Liberator IIs (based on Sordins but with added win!)

I think I'm running with the PSC guys at LOWII, so would it be possible to test them out then?

These were what I was originally looking at, but I would need to buy a new PTT. I know they aren't super nice quality, but for someone who doesn't use comms on a regular basis, do you think these would be okay?

Yea that'd be fine. I haven't used the replica headsets personally, but Android tried them and from what he told me, he wasn't impressed.

Okay, well I'll investigate around a little more and see what I can find. Thanks for the advice!

You're getting what you pay for with the knock-off Comtac's. My Bravo one had the sound amplification die, so while I could still send/receive comms, I couldn't hear squat. My Z-tactical ones had issues with all the other PTT's I have.

My RS Comtac II's are low impedance, so ATM they won't work with my regular FRS radios until I buy/jerry-rig/make a deal with the devil for a low impedance to high impedance adapter. I'd get some Sordins but I'll want the dual-com feature my Comtac's have and I'm not completely made out of money (unlike Jewish Ninja). ;)

On the positive note, the Comtac's work incredibly well when I'm shooting real-steel. :D

I'd like to get some real Sordins, but I definitely don't have the money for them. I'll just keep looking around and maybe I'll find something in between :|

I'd either get a bowman style headset or go full hog and get a real set of sordins/ TCIs. The knock off headsets aren't really worth the time or money.
