Sadly Underwhelmed

Postby Frin » Thu Mar 26, 2015 10:34 pm

Went to the Red Alert event and I was super excited for a command structure, but before the game had even started I realized that there really wasn't going to be any. I was on the Russian team (I was the guy who biffed it and blew the crouch out of my pants), and I'm not sure how it was on the American team, but for us Russians it was less than awesome. There was some use of comms among the teams such as FOAD, but aside from that there may have been someone every hour or so who would do a comms check and then it would just be silent for a while. I guess it could have just been my radio was piss poor (I plan on returning it), but still, I have a feeling there just wasn't much. Sadly, I have a feeling that unless you're on a team, that's just how it is. I was rather underwhelmed.

Well, I'm sorry you had a bad experience. It just happens sometimes. I would suggest going to a wider variety of games including some MSW games if you can.

Come to more games. Play with different people. We on NATO had a blast at Red Alert....

Well that's unforetunate your experience wasn't the same as others were. I do know for a little while things were a little scarce while the commander lent a hand with a injury to one of our admin. Sometimes these sort of things happen. Commanders are a volunteer position. It's not a easy task and if you feel it's not going right then offer a hand of support while playing. This is where team work can also play a role than just pew pewing it

I guess I should have clarified ha, I enjoyed the game immensely, and I definitely plan on attending more, it was more specifically a part of the game not the game in general.

Milsim games have a very specific command structure. In non-milsim games, there always a large mix of what to expect, and what people want out of command. Some don't want to be told what to do, some think they do but turn and do whatever as soon as the game starts, and others actually want a strict command structure.
It's a fine line that command has to consider, to ensure everybody has fun, while giving their team the best opportunity for success. I thought Pacman did a pretty good job, considering how many noobs he had, and they were outnumbered. I've only been to a few non-milsim games where command had a strict, complex plan, and people as a whole actually followed it.

Especially considering he was out of the game for a good amount of time due to the admin getting injured. By the way, does anyone know that admins status?

Unfortunately with such a large amount of walk ons and a large amount of RSVP flaking you cannot formulate a perfect game plan. Radios always suck and dedicating a channel for more than a small squad ends up leaving a hot mess of open mics, VOX'ing and random movement reports that are incoherent unless you're part of the element moving. Comms are a weak point at any event and in this case I had to keep my channel on admin to receive updates as they came in and was dealing with a medical emergency and extraction. In a more formalized event only squad leaders will keep in constant communication with command. Feel free to step up and lead a squad at the next event and I guarantee you'll be in the loop. The only downside to this is the squads can change dynamically depending on who shows up. Regular teams are motivated by their membership to attend so almost always can be counted on to appear and plan around plus they have comms plans that allow for on the fly changes. Anyone else who has constructive criticism please step up and sound off.
In the end it's hard to overcome superior numbers and massive equipment failures on our part no matter who was commanding

He injured his knee fairly good and will be out of airsoft and heavy activity on it for at least 3 weeks with a brace.
