"Polymer"

Postby icebullet » Fri Feb 17, 2012 1:44 am

Let's get this straight.

Is it possible to say plastic, instead of polymer, and reserve that for actual DuPont polymers like from Magpul, Tango Down, and other actual gun companies?

I don't want to get into a whole science debate over what's what. YES, plastic=polymer and polymer=plastic. They are somewhat the same thing, but ABS is much different in ways of manufacturing than polymer.

Also, I don't think guns being pumped out of China and Taiwan really have "polymer" except for maybe the ones with Magpul Furniture or the Magpul Masada.

I'm sorry, but when I watch a ASGI, Evike, or review video about a gun, and I hear "polymer", I shudder, because it's NOT POLYMER, IT'S PLASTIC.

Plastics are polymers, but polymers aren't plastics. Calling a plastic a polymer is correct though not as specific as it could be.

We can't even get people to differentiate between clips and mags.

I think you should read more about polymers before posting things like this.

A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that are moldable. Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often contain other substances. They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural.

A polymer is a large molecule (macromolecule) composed of repeating structural units. These sub-units are typically connected by covalent chemical bonds. Although the term polymer is sometimes taken to refer to plastics, it actually encompasses a large class of compounds comprising both natural and synthetic materials with a wide variety of properties.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS) is a copolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene

A heteropolymer or copolymer is a polymer derived from two (or more) monomeric species

classic army uses polymer in lots of their furniture, GG does as well, they even have complete polymer bodies on their sportline guns. No not ABS, but POLYMER. Now i havent watched ASGI's reviews so they could be full of shit, but there are plenty of airsoft guns using high quality polymers for furniture and entire receivers in some cases.

+1 for complaining about clips/mags instead. I don't think there even are any clips for airsoft guns.

I understand what OP said wasn't logical... But at the same time, I kind of agree with him. It bothers me when reviews say "Made of high quality polymer" when in reality it's cheap, misc. plastic fresh off of a Chinese assembly line.

Could we have an example of when ASGI or Evike said "polymer" instead of "plastic?"

Are you sure your problem is with the word Polymer and not the term high-quality? Because that would make sense. We've established that plastics are polymers, so the original gripe is based on inaccurate information.

Negative, good sir. Those are, in fact, pellet-feeding magazines replicating the look (and potentially feel,) of an M1 Garand clip. ;)

Without a rim on a BB, it'd be very hard to get BB's to stay on a clip, I'd wager.

Those K98ks are shell-feeding. They use clips like the real thing ;) Taking a closer look at the Marushin, it is a magazine, but sure as hell isn't supposed to look like one.
