Hand-made 1911 Grips

First, pics. All photos are of grips I made with a scroll saw, sandpaper, and a lot of patience...

Now, I have a question: how do I sell these? I'm looking to make this a sort of a job over the summer, but I can't seem to get this idea off the ground. The problem is, I've been told by every gun store owner, 1911-lover, and casual observer that they look great, but none of that appreciation has turned into actual sales. I tried turning to the real-steel shooting community, but (at least as far as 1911 grips go) the market seems somewhat saturated. Is there a market for something like this in airsoft? Any help would be appreciated.

[insert shameless plug here] I have been woodworking for about 5 years now, and out of all the stuff I make, grips are the most fun. Not sure if it's the exotic woods I get to work with or what, but I really enjoy it. Anyway, all of these grips are for sale for $60 per set (includes shipping). This might seem a little steep, but it is even with or lower than the price of any exotic wood grips you can find on the internet. Also keep in mind that these are not CNC machined, like 90% of all the wood grips on the market. They are made and finished by hand, and I go to painstaking length to make sure every set is perfect. If you don't see a set you want here, I can make them to your specifications (e.g. species of wood, tapered or magwell bottom cut, finger grooves, etc.) for most gun types. My only limitation (due to a lack of CNC) is that I can't make anything with a compound cut or wrap-around grip. This would include the Sig P220 series and the Desert Eagle. If you're not sure, ask me and I'll let you know if I can make grips for your gun.

i would try ebay or gunbroker. unfortunately, most people wont make the distinction between handcrafted and machined, they will only see the price difference.

those do look nice though. i personally prefer synthetic grips, but nice wood ones add a touch of class.

also, are you protecting them with laquer or anything? just bare wood will probably wear pretty quickly, depending on what kind it is.

Like the guys already pointed out ebay or gunbroker. That's usually where airsofters buy their grips as well.

I would have tried Ebay, but I was told that you have to give them a percentage of the money you make on every sale. I don't want to raise the price any more to make the same amount of money. I will have to check out Gunbroker, though; didn't know about it before now.

And thanks for the compliments, Beran. I protect the grips from moisture with a couple coats of Danish oil, and then finish them with a satin laquer.

How much would it cost to have a set made if I sent you a few slabs of some apple wood?

Extremely nice work, sir. I may buy a set or two in the future. Yes, e-bay sucks and I mean SUCKS, literally...your profit margin. Lately I've lost more than I wanted due to their selling fees calculated by the selling price. It's funny how you can place very popular and real deal items at a free site in a forum and get little to no interest from people and then you put it up on e-bay and people rush like mad to bid or buy your items. Yeah...you sell your item and get decent money out of it but then you end up losing 8-9% of your total profit + fees for using e-bay.

@toonvater - No, I have never made grips for an M9.

@quigly - PM me with some measurements on the pieces of wood. Should be around $25-$30 if you supply the wood.

@Tactical Church - PM me with the grips you want.

you might also go around to other airsoft forums and real steel sites and peddle your grips there. word of warning though: dont mention airsoft on the real sites. most of them wont take you seriously if you do.

Those Afzelia Xylay grips look absolutely stunning. If I owned a 1911 (Soon, soon. Oh so soon...) This would definitely be something worth looking into.

Great job, though. Sometimes it's nice to get away from all the synthetics/polymer and get back to a classic.
