Complete Radio Setup

Postby Switchback » Sat May 21, 2011 9:57 pm

Esteemed Operators of Airsoft Pacific:

I am inquiring for someone else, for my own benefit:

We need (2) complete radio setups that can be used in conjunction with (the most common) types of personal handheld radios out today.

Must have:
PTT (duh)
Earphones
Microphone with a push button (throat mic?)
Low profile to fit under shooting earmuffs OR Earmuff format with auto-noise-cutoff (for firearms)

I am new to radios, don't know anything about them. Push button, say words. Release button, wait, hear words.
Please point me (us) in the right direction.

Thank You.

Look into the Midland 2 pack of radios.

Edit: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/7 ... ation.html

Those will work with the networks that airsofters use. Some will say get an Icom radio, some will say Tri-Square. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses (ICOM is better built with more power, but is expensive and hard to program; Tri-Square are cheap and secure, but they don't run on normal FRS channels so you can't talk to admins and non-team teammates).

As Jester said, the FRS radios are by far the most common. The big downside of this is hot miking. I have not been to an event yet where some dolt intentionally or accidentally has his gear or butt pushing the ptt and making the radio unusable. One can always change the channel, but the trick is getting everyone to do it. this happens somewhat with the Tri sqyares, but they are tougher to monitor ( by opposition). One other issue is the batteries that the radios come with. Usually the batteries are 600mah and last 2-4 hrs tops. The cure is the 2400mah recharagable batteries tou can get at the good old Radio Shack. These batts are good for the whole day.

Thank You, Sir.
Going to order off Bass Pro; the ones on "BHPhoto" are back-ordered. After reading a few reviews, we are a little worried about the included headsets; any ideas for headsets that are a little more high-quality?

Nasty, I looked at the ICOM radios and was quite impressed! Maybe later when I buy personal ones...

I agree - I have one of the Wouxun KG-699E's and I couldn't be happier.
Rugged, long lasting, and dual freq monitoring allows me to slingshot orders to my team between 2 channels at long distances.
LOVE these radios!

Nasty, picked up a couple of Icom F21s on eBay for a pretty good price. Now I need PTTs and headsets.

I looked up the Liberator headsets, but they are way too pricey for my budget. Any other suggestions? What about Peltor or throat mikes?
