The sharp-eyed among you will notice that this is a second pattern lower, with the pivot pin retaining pin boss but without a mag release fence, making it either an XM16E1 or M16, with an M16A2 upper receiver on top. Half that rifle was carried by Jesus when he was a poor Corporal in Vietnam, and its still being used at Fairchild AFB, waiting for the second coming.

That is SSgt Clark, he's one of our CATM instructors over at the 92nd SFS. A couple of years back when we placed all of our M16s in long term storage, I found a lower with a serial number in the 9000s - so old, the receiver stated it was chambered in .223. I know the SERE guys still have some GAU-5s with M4 uppers, which are basically USAF XM-177s.

I find this amusing. Its pretty much always been a forgone conclusion that the M4 was an offshoot of the M16, since its all basically the same bits (my local PD has an issue rifle that's basically an A2 rifle with the Military Carbine stock) and they're all pretty much interchangable. It all comes back to being an AR-15, once you get down to it.

And it seems to me, also, that the USAF pretty much gets the sloppy seconds and leftovers from the other branches. I mean, cannibalizing an XM16 lower and an M16A2 upper, you don't see that in the Marines. But then, if it goes bang when you need it to, does it really matter?

Interesting find. Doesn't surprise me in the least though, a lot of our military's weaponry/vehicles/etc. are around 50 years old or so. Hell, the C-130 is still in production. Sometimes things just don't need changing, and sometimes things are kept around for a lot longer than necessary.

One interesting note is that the USAF were actually the first branch to purchase and use the Ar15/M16. The Army adopted it later and suggested changes that became the M16A1.

Wouldnt that setup require a conversion piece for the piviot pin? Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the piviot pin on an A1 an different diamiter?

I'm correcting you, because you're wrong.

some of the colt "SP1" rifles use different sized pins, but the military models, they all use the same.
