Airsoft Initiation Rituals

Postby Tin Man » Sun Jun 06, 2010 6:36 pm

An essay I wrote for initiations rites of a modern culture group, the Nwas. I figured a few people may get a kick out of this.

The Toy Soldiers
The initiation ritual of an Nwas is both physically and mentally brutal. To understand why, however, one must know some of their culture. It is a small tribe, formed within the last decade and a half that spends nearly all of its time engaged in simulated combat. They typically use a weapon known as an “airsoft gunâ€

This is exactly the shit that gives airsoft a bad light, and a perfect example of why not to use it for a school project.

Hazing is generally frowned upon by civilized society, doing it publicly with replica firearms is down right idiotic.

I meant most of this as a joke. The teacher thought it was very interesting, at least. Hell, I got an A.

Also, try to read it from the point of view of an anthropologist studying this group, What would they see?

They wouldn't see us as a bunch of faggy paramilitary rednecks who systematically question incomers sexuality and then abuse them with replica firearms. They'd see it as a hobby that draws a variety of people into a simulation of what was known at the time as 'videogames'.

Alright, I get the picture. Teacher is too old to care about airsoft, and I apologize for painting this group in a bad light. I didn't see anything you guys are saying when I wrote it, and though I have difficulty seeing them now, I understand where you are coming from. Won't do it again.

Great. So, a person who doesn't know that its a crock of shit now operates under the impression of how the game works that is fundamentally flawed. Awesome. Well played. Would you like to just rape everyones mothers with a golf club now?

You want an initiation rite? Grid 18. That was an initiation right there.

I take this as an Anthroplogical look at what we do as airsofters. It is a way to make example of how we look at other cultures when we study them. Often other cultures seem strange or weird. we often wonder why the hell certain people do certain things. This proves that the way we percieve other cultures is skewed. I remember from college anthropology class reading an article about the Nacirema people who worship at an alter daily dragging sharp blades across their face. Nacirema= american backwards and they were talking about shaving in the morning. I think this is the one time an airsoft themed school project made sense.

I'm not an anthropologist, but rather a sociologist. Our training is pretty similar and there's a lot of overlap (which means both groups, with a B.A. can competently clean restrooms). As either, the original poster has a point--you've got to remove yourself from the society and portray things in a "objective" sense--the Nacireman example is a classic one. However, like most things made for high school reading, it goes too far. So does this. The Nacireman example does it, though, with a mind toward the reader's perception. This does not. When you portray any group and then show your writings to society, you have to be aware of two ethical considerations. First, how those that read it, who aren't group members, will view the group. That doesn't necessarily have to be "good," but you shouldn't go out of your way to portray the "bad." Second, you need to be careful how your writing makes the group that took the time to show you inside it feel. Again, this doesn't have to be "touchy-feely," but you shouldn't piss off your group, either. A good example of this middle ground is Rich Mitchell's book on survivalists.
