Sleepy Question: AK + M203

Postby Sleepy » Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:34 pm

This is strictly speculative. Lets ignore that it might very well be gay. Lets ignore that its not going to happen for a year or two anyways, I just want to know. My brain won't shut up about it, and I have a few ideas, but I don't actually know if they'd work.

How would you go about mounting this M203 on this AK?

I'm of the feeling that it will probably involve getting some custom work done, for a barrel on the AK, front mount on the M203, and some sheet metal done in place of the lower handguard to hide the rear mount.

All I'm asking about, is how would you guys do it? Nothing else. What sort of issues might you anticipate? If you can't contribute, do me a favor and spare me your opinions.

Well, I would say just get a GP-15 GP-25 GP-30 or other AK launcher.... BUT!

You can shoot nerf rounds with this, which is cool.

I would attach a level RIS to the plastic handgaurd, and then custom make a fitting on the front of the barrel with another RIS to support the wieght.

One thing you should consider about his, is the M203 is a big launcher, due to the M16 being bigger than an AK, the launcher follows this. So you may just wanna compare sizes with Hard evidence to figure if it looks ok.

Edited for spelling errors.

You could get an apegay (or any AK with a lower RIS) and mount it there?

The movie XXX had an M203 mounted on an AKM, and, while it doesn't appear to be the most graceful combination, it appears to kind of work. Kind of being the operative phrase.

It's an m4 length barrel mounted launcher, not a rail mounted launcher. Follow the link he gave you.

Just curious, do you already own these two items or will you be getting one/both of them down the line?

The standard M203 won't mount an AK, it's designed for the AR-15 delta ring. You have to options; one, go the easy route and use an RIS system with railed launcher, or try your best to copy the M203PI mount (which is what they used in XXX). You can find the real M203PI here: http://m203pi.com/home.htm

My only question is why is an AKM receiver mated with a 74 type muzzle brake? (And before you say "It's a modified 103", no, it's got a 45 degree gas block and a lower receiver without a side-fold button)

Probably because it's a movie, and "Cool" outranks "Correct" in most action films.

Thats what I'm trying to suss out. Right now, I'm using an M4, and I know I want an M203 down the road, but I've found that I really rather like the AK-74, and it might be integrated into a team concept anyways. So IF this can be made to work, I'd be getting both in about a year or so.

The reason why I ask, and notate it as a Sleepy Question, is because I've been pondering it myself for a while now, and I can only do so much work in my head.

So to answer your question in the simplest terms, yes you can put an M203 on your AK74 but it will take some modification.

Now its time for opinions. The above looks far cooler (and is more mil-sim if thats what you want to go for later) than any M203/AK combo.

If you're going to be buying brand new, using ASGI prices:

$135 for the AK + $110 for AK grenade launcher and little or no puppy dog farts to get it on... OR + $115 for M203 and some unicorn burps to get it on sturdy.

The reason why I'm going with the M203 is the ability to use howlers, rare as it may be, I'd like to have the option, and the GPs don't do that.

If you aren't gonna be doing this for a year or so wait till the Airsoft Innovations launcahble 40mm shell is released, it may negate the need for howlers, and then you would have no issue with using a GP30.

If you do want to use an M203 however, your best bet will be a RIS mounted one and a railed front end on your AK.
