Ghillie Suit

Postby aDeibel5 » Thu Aug 02, 2007 8:50 pm

I am working on some camo for my L96 Sniper Rifle and I was looking online at www.ghilliesuit.com and found that I cost about 100$ and 20 hours of work to creat your own ghillie suit and I was wondering If there is any way to make a ghillie suit with cheaper materials or if there is any makets that sell them for any cheaper.

So pretty MUCH tell me (if you know any) ways to get a hold of this stuff the price and a link

THANKS

Hit your local fabric store, bring along a camo sample that has the colors you want, this could be just a magazine photo. Lots of colors in a store like this, having a guide of some type will save more time than you might think. Canvas or burlap, even some cotton materials will work. Most fabric stores have a remnant shelf with bargain leftovers on it. Start there.

Then mix that with a good 20 hours or so of work and perfecting. Then you are almost done.

BDU's,
1" nylon netting, or 2" ect...
Some canvas to reinforce the elbows, knees, and if necessary or applicable the chest and upper legs.
-If you want a little padding, use the liner material that is used in cabinets, it is plyable and soft. Sew it in under the canvas or camo material.

-Cut some vents into the back of the suit. It'll save a lot of heat issues. (use like a nylon mesh to bridge the vents. A mosquito net is a good item to use)

Use uphostery thread to fix the netting to the jacket and trousers. (or build it to a piece of canvas and use buttons on the BDU set)

Jute string
Burlap Strips

Colors: Brown, Dark Brown, Tan, and a little Olive Green

Thread some 550 cord through the netting for veg.

*build a brown base. There is more natural brown than green. Dirt is brown, wood is brown, ect. Use natural vegatation to green you up.

Good luck.

I used 1" netting that I had around the house (like fishnet) for the base, then I went to Joan Fabrics and bought 2 yards of each color of predied burlap. Dark Brown, Light Brown, and Green. Then, I dethreaded the burlap, thread by thread, this took a LONG time. I just did it while watching movies, and listening to music. After a good while, I had the burlap sheets broken down into their respective threads.

Then I mixed the different color strands by hand into groups of 4-7 strands. And tied them onto the netting. This took a long time but it only cost me 17$ for the all the burlap. Then of course when you get to the place you are going to play at, cut and attach small branches and leaves to match the scenery.

I play in a deserty area, and attached some sage, seemed to do the trick for me.

So to answer your question, 17$ for burlap for a full ghillie, and all the colors you basically need, is a hard price to argue with. Just depends how many man hours you are willing to put in. That alone might be the cost. That still leaves you to search for netting, some suggest the volleyball net, but I like 1" squares, 4"x4" just seems too big for my tastes. Good luck.
