non military nameplates, patches, etc

Discuss anything and everything here that's Airsoft related.

non military nameplates, patches, etc

Postby Bircher » Sat Aug 11, 2012 9:54 am

So based on what I've read on the site. It seems that alot of ex-military don't like people to where patches, nametapes, etc. that they have not earned. Why is this? Is this true? Or am I just misreading things.

My opinion-
im not in the military, but im pretty sure most men and women in the service would be proud that a younger person looks up to and wants to emulate someone with honor and pride...

I have friends and family in the military and have an incredible appreciation for what they do. But by wearing a symbol of rank or achievement that you did not earn, is disrespectful to their achievement and service. It lessens the power and meaning behind that symbol.

Another example: I have two college degrees I keep in my office. They are just pieces of paper, but I spent years of my life and tens of thousands of dollars to earn those. It would piss me off if someone just copied those pieces of paper and put them up in their office like they had done the same amount of work.

There's a point when it stops being cute and resemble any kind of "tribute". A teenager playing airsoft is not the proper person to wear awards and decorations earned and died for by veterans. Even having been on the military I wear no rank or insignia associated with my military service. If you've earned it by all means wear it otherwise put it in a shadow box because one cannot know the honor and pride of them having not earned them. Lookup "stolen valor" and read the stories of teenagers and adults who are defaming the symbols they pretend to have earned.

Pacman is certainly right. There are a lot of people who fake this as a means of getting recognition or benefits. But I've heard mixed reviews on this subject. Some military people don't care. Some are up in arms about it. Look up "Stolen valor" and make your own decision. If you decide to put insignia on your uniform keep in mind a couple things.

-Do NOT claim to be of a certain rank if someone asks if you're in the Army or Navy etc. Just politely say you're not. Even if you plan on going into the service in the future say you're not military.
-If someone asks you to remove it than be respectful and remove it.
-Act like the insignia you're wearing and be respectful.

Name tapes are fine. I've never seen someone phony pony about that. The majority of the disagreement comes from younger people wearing ranks and things like a Ranger or Airborne tab or putting a SEAL Trident or a SWCC on your uniform cause your grandfather was a part of that group.

and if you're going to do it do it right.

Okay, so its the fact that some people will wear an insignia they just bought at a military surplus then claimed they actually owned it.

Good, Because I was planning on putting a Private first class or Corporal insignia on my loadout. So that would be okay as long as I'm not like- "Z0mg 1m 0n SEA1 T3AM 51x! I K1ll3d 05am@!!@!@!#!"

Consider the age involved here..
I was merely pointing out stolen valor to show the asshats who take it too far, the kids can wear whatever they like as long as they remember there are people who might look negatively on it.

Also, the Stolen Valor act itself primarily covers using decorations and medals, not unit insignia or name tapes, or even (arguably) tabs. There's a difference between the act itself and what people are generally calling 'stolen valor'.

My great grandpa was a PFC in WWII, then in Korea he got promoted to Corporal. So its kind of a personal tribute to him.

I guess while this thread is up,

Does anyone know where I can get a custom nametape?
When I was at ResIV and Sundown 3, I saw alot of people that had their callsigns on their nametape.

Just so everyone is aware, the Stolen Valor Act was struck down by the Supreme Court in June...
