The 5th of May is a Mexican celebration , not all Hispanics celebrate this day , for us it's just another day.

Some people in Mexico call today "5 de Gringo" , because so many Americans use it as another excuse to drink and get drunk.

Silly me. I thought it was a day to get drunk on tequila.

This is different from May fourth and May sixth, as these are just some of the 300+ days to get drunk on Jaeger.

And in celebration of Cinco De Mayo, I'm drinking TVR's. Tequila, Vodka, Red Bull.

Im sorry, but this is still the day of Mexican Independence. In the area I am, there is a huge chicano banquet and traditional stuff is all over the place for about a week. I actually think its pretty awesome, even is the 5th is a little fudge on the date of Mexican Independence.

The only reason theres public awareness about it is because of our Chicano (i.e. NOT hispanic, which refers to everyone of Spanish descent, even Castillians) population in the US. The fact that its an excuse to get drunk is even better. But its still a legit holiday, just unimportant to US citizens.

It is kinda funny that we celebrate Mexican Independance. In America. Generally with more fanfare than our own Independence Day stuff. I mean 4th of July gets you a three day weekend, most years. Not five days of public drunkenness.
