EOtech VS. Irons?

Postby pseudoanimosity » Sat Jan 15, 2011 8:56 pm

First off, I would like to say that I'm not sure which forum this belongs in, so if an admin feels the need to move it, go right ahead.

So, I have a problem: I've tried several different magnified optics, and have been displeased with them in terms of speed, and sight picture. My question is: Does an unmagnified optic, such as an EOtech replica really make a difference in terms of target acquisition, speed, and accuracy compared to iron sights, or is it not worth the 100$ that I would have to shell out for one?

With Iron Sights, once you have zeroed the weapon, you will basically be required to obtain the same sight picture every time that you aim your weapon. The benefit of an optic like a Reflex Sight is so that one it is zeroed all you have to do is put the dot on your target and squeeze. Reflex sights also have the added benefit of allowing you to keep both eyes open and scanning for targets while aiming. So to answer your question, yes an optic is usually worth what you pay for it. I would also recommend keeping the iron sights on or finding a suitable set of back up iron sights since batteries like to fail when you most need the optic.

Reflex sights and red dots definately help with asthetics and quick target acquisition in a way that iron sights just cant quite achieve. As for price, sure you can spend as much as you want on an EOTech or any level of its replica, but I've had nice success with adjustable intensity red/green dots more around the $40 range. But yeah, the more money the cleaner picture and nicer external look. Having the second eye open and not needing to line up sights is surely preferable in heavy engagement situations. Despite all that, I believe it's pretty badass to be good with iron sights. As displayed by Val Kilmer in my beloved movie Heat.

Totally agree. That's why people spend thousands on cool load-outs and external upgrades on their guns!

You don't necessarily have to get an eotech. The G&P 30mm Military RDS has had soooo many good reviews about it, and it's pretty affordable, although I do think an eotech looks better. I personally use an Aimpoint Micro replica and have replica TROY battle sights as backups, even though they are mostly for looks.

Besides the tactical benefits such as faster target acquisition, looking tacticool by having a nice optic on a gun gives a player a nice confidence boost :)

The thing is, EOTechs make it easier. That is to say, not necessarily better, just easier. Iron sights can be used just as accurately and with just as quick of target acquisition, it just takes more training and more experience with your rifle to get to the speed of an electronic sight. Electronic sights are useful if you're going to be using a lot of weapons, or at night, while iron sights are nice because they don't break and they don't run out of batteries. I suggest irons, and like KA-BAR said a ghost ring with fiber optic is bloody awesome.
