Im sorry, but this is still the day of Mexican Independence. In the area I am, there is a huge chicano banquet and traditional stuff is all over the place for about a week. I actually think its pretty awesome, even is the 5th is a little fudge on the date of Mexican Independence.

The only reason theres public awareness about it is because of our Chicano (i.e. NOT hispanic, which refers to everyone of Spanish descent, even Castillians) population in the US. The fact that its an excuse to get drunk is even better. But its still a legit holiday, just unimportant to US citizens.
