I wouldn't go with a KWA CQR (or a KWA in general). When they first came out, everything was "pure" KWA. Heat-treated gears, decent 9mm bearings, and generally a rather high-quality gun for the price. Once it hit off, KWA had to meet the the demand by ramping up supply.
Enter cut corners.
My local airsoft store's (Weapon Blender) first shipment of CQRs (a few hundred units) sold fine and haven't come back with any problems. However, the second and third shipment down the road have had numerous problems. Gears stripping, bearings failing, and guns misfeeding like you wouldn't believe. When the owners of Weapon Blender went to Shot Show 2013 and talked to reps at the KWA USA booth, this is the story they were told...
Apparently KWA International, over in Taiwan, had to meet the demands of the market after the CQR line took off. KWA USA wasn't aware of the corners that KWA International was cutting with the CQR line. So, when gears strip on the current generation of KWA CQRs, WB sends them to KWA USA and gets genuine KWA gears for free. That deal also includes other parts on the CQR line.
Other than the KWA International and KWA USA SNAFU, I would avoid KWA for other reasons.
- Proprietary external parts (specifically the upper and lower receiver)
- Shoddy mag compatablity
- Proprietary hopup. It's a decent hop up actually, it's a copy of the old Mauri one, but it's just not standard. The only reason they went with a two piece is so the gun could break open like an actual AR-15. Not really that big of a deal in my book. It just leads to more of a chance of parts being out of spec and misaligning.
- Somewhat proprietary internal parts. Mauri standard parts can "work" in a KWA, but not work well.
- 9mm Bearings. Bearings are just kinda "bleh". Not to mention that you can't really find 9mm replacement bushings or bearings without paying a premium or cut on quality. If you had an 8mm Mauri spec gearbox, on the other hand, finding high quality replacement parts is easy.
